The coolest i7

Hello! I am looking for what would be the coolest (as in lowest temps) i7-7700 or equivalent option. Like, would getting a 7700t be the coolest option or would getting a 7700k and undervolting and clocking a reasonable amount render a cooler solution. I am asking this because it is going to be in a very compact space with only a Noctua NH-L9i to cool it and there will be little airflow besides that. I also have to factor in how hot the motherboard itself may get. Any suggestions or advice?

6700/6700t Wil be cooler than ANY kabylake i5/i7, the TIM is way better on skylake.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

thanks, i'll keep that in mind. same question though. 6700t or modified 6700k. Also, are 8700k reviews out (I haven't been staying on top of tech news at all recently), is that chip decent and cool?

Decent yes, cool no.  It runs hotter than the 7700k m8.

Now for skylake I was able to get my 6700k to 4.6ghz on stock so that may be a good option.

The adhesive was the issue on KBL and not the TIM...

I would get whichever K you can get for cheapest and undervolt it for stock clocks or overclock for stock voltage.

ok, I guess I'll skip on that but does it work with z170/z270 motherboards or does skylake work with whatever new chipset goes with the 8700k? Because if I get the 6700k and it turns out that my worries about temps were for nothing, I wouldn't complain if I could return the chip and get an 8700k.

I'd say, 7700k, or 8700k, underclock and undervolt allot, and delid and replace the tim or leave the HS off.

No, coffeelake doesn't work with Z170/Z270 due to firmware. Your worries about temps are for nothing, anything under 90c is perfectly fine, although getting a k cpu and undervolting, pushing out less heat will keep your room a bit cooler is all.

The i7-8700K would dump out even more heat; it's a 6-core 12 thread chip.

You have 2 extra cores generating more heat compared to a i7-7700 or i7-6700.

Plus, Intel specs the i7-8700K with 95W TDP of heat.

The i7-7700K and i7-6700K are both spec'ed at 91W.

The i7-8700K uses a new chipset; it will not work on Z170 or Z270.

You will need a 300 series motherboard.

If heat is an issue, you could consider a i7-7700 or i7-6700 as well.

The "non-K' versions.

The 8600K runs very cool and is only behind by a few percent against the 8700K. Magetank said in status update on my profile that 5.0 os common without a delid.

For context, its going into an aluminum box that is just big enough to fit the motherboard (PSU and GPU are in a different compartment) and only has a vent for the cpu fan intake and some slits for outake. It's not getting an ideal cooling treatment and in this case, how loud the fan is is almost as important as performance. I don't have much experience in this so I can't make a call on whether a nh-l9i can adequetely cool a 7700k and such while keeping a decent fan speed and a cpu speed.

Would you say a 7700k or 8700k wouldn't be slowed down by a Noctua NH-L9i with little airflow?

Well, I'll be under clocking probs down to whatever can keep 3ghz or so stable and hope that it is cool enough.

How does 6c/6t stack up against the 4c/8t of kaby lake? I'm looking at single threaded performance mostly. I'll do my research on coffee lake sometime next week but I kind want to know if its even a good option for me first.

No, it wouldn't be slowed down, you could possibly even oc it if the cpu fan is there

rawr.

6c/6t vs 4c/8t,  i'd go with 4c/8t, Coffeelakes ipc is better than kabylakes.
