Wifi speeds are a lot slower than LAN.

Nickco43

I just upgraded to the Verizon Fios Gigabit connection. I have full speed on my LAN network but my Wifi is a lot slower.

Here is my setup:

Verizon ONT I-211M-L connected with a CAT 6 cable to a Linksys EA6350.

Linksys EA6350 connected with a CAT 6 cable to a Netgear GS116 Switch

Netgear GS116 Switch connected with a CAT 5E cable to a Linksys WRT1900AC

On my desktop I get the full speed and that is connected via LAN to the Netgear switch. The wireless radios are disabled on the Linksys EA6350 and no one connects to it. On my 2017 Macbook Air I am connected to the Linksys WRT1900AC and I am getting terrible speeds. Verizon said they can't help me since I refuse to use their junk router. I have no idea what to do, please help!

Did you ever upgrade the firmwares of both modems? Most of them ship from the factory with a basic firmware which is limited.

The 2.4GHz and 5GHZ bands are combined int one. Should I disable that?

Check speeds with iperf within your LAN

Don't use external endpoints to check the speed of your LAN

there's no IP address anywhere...

OP, define "terrible", are we talking half of what you should be getting, less than half?

How far away from the signal is your laptop?

What are you measuring speeds with?

I am right next to the router when doing the test.

I do a lot of gamehosting and my IP is readily available, of course the hosted machines are somewhat separate from my network and all that, it really isn't that bad.

OP, generally WiFi can be slower if the device doesn't support the full speed, in your case I'm 90% sure it should but does the wireless access point have all the channels enabled?Check that they're all active.

Yours faithfully

Hmm, seems it doesn't let you pick, my router came with some form of openWRT on it and allowed selecting between single to quad band wifi (although I only think it has dual band support). try using a wifi analyser on your phone to find a band not used by neighbours and set that one, that could also be a cause.

also, what kind of link speeds are you getting from your WiFi cards? If the link speeds arent going above ~300 Mb/s then I would say you are probably just on the 2.4 band and not 5. You could try disabling the 2.4 band to test.

Well that about leaves me stumped, what wifi card is in the machine? is it 1Gbps capable? I don't know Macs very well at all. Looking at the specs, it seems there might be a weakness in there from so many devices when using the wifi, I think this is the practical limit of wifi.

Set channel width to the max (40MHz or 60MHz if possible)

Set network mode to A/N Only and retest

Edit:

Also, you need to set security to "WPA2 Personal Only"

Does all the Ethernet pass through's to the wireless access point actually support 1Gbps? If I was to connect to my server through my router the connection is only 100Mbps because that's all the bandwidth the router will let through (I'm not sure why, I don't care enough to speed a week working on it for speed I'll never need)

The switches and linksys router next to the Verizon box are all 1gb. I now have the wrt1900ac in the little 1gig switch that the desktop geting 1gb lan is plugged into.
