audio is probably the only thing i dont know about pc's so im a big noob when it comes to this kind of stuff.

im looking to buy some speakers primarily for gaming but have no idea what to look for.

looking around the forums i hear sound cards are useless?

not sure how good my on board audio is i have a z77 sabretooth.

any setup suggestions are welcome.

budget is no more than $300.

this depends on what kind of sound quality you are looking for. but to be honest $300 is not a lot when it comes to audio

if you are looking for something simple and easy setup then something all in one (2.1, 5.1 etc) from Logitech, Corsair (SP2500), Creative, klipsch

or you can spend some more and get a multi-channel receiver from the makes of Onkiyo, Sony, yamaha ......   and connect it to a set of speakers from sony, yamaha, klipsch. bose, behringer, JBL, harman/Kardon  (lots and lots)

you might need to get a sound card depending on the system that you are looking at.  a sound card might give you support for Dolby Digital surround sound and things like that. but if you use a AMP and a set of speakers instead of a receiver then a good sound card will make a huge difference
