upgrading whole pc necessary?

jigsawe

My current system (approx 4 years old):

intel core i7 4930k 3.4ghz 6 core 12 threads

nvidia gtx 780 3gb

32gb ddr3 (4x8gb)

Asus rampage iv gene micro-atx

Im definitely upgrading to a gtx 1080 or TI, but was wondering if it would be necessary to upgrade any other parts

PC is mainly used for workstation, (maya, some video editing) and some casual gaming

I was wondering if it would make much difference in speed if upgrade to a new MB with DDR4 memory, and maybe a i7 7700k

Thanks

A i7-7700K would be a downgrade.

Slap a new GPU in there and get off to the races. Not worth anything near the money to upgrade everything else.

Currently majoring in computer networking. That's about it yeah. Not much goes on in my life.

not really
if you compare stock clocks against stock clocks you'd only loose a tiny bit in multithreaded performance but thats it

Im not sure if the 2 extra cores have much benefit. I was thinking faster clock speeds will be better for real time performance in maya viewport or video playback fps?

It's a K series so you can overclock it. Get a good cooler and try that. worst case you still have a good cooler that would work with new CPUs to allow overclocking as well.

get a 1080, 1080 ti, or wait till vega pricing is stable, like many other people are saying, replacing any of your other parts would be a huge downgrade

With those specs, you're set for life. Throw in a new graphics card to keep it competitive. Maybe try overclocking the CPU a bit.

With both processors overclocked, I'm willing to bet that the i7-4930K would still have a somewhat decent lead in highly multithreaded workloads... not to mention that it has quad channel, more PCIe lanes and more L3 cache.

Doesn't make much sense for someone who mainly uses their PC as a workstation to go from a HEDT platform to a mainstream one.

there really isn't much room to upgrade in LGA 2011 besides grabbing a XEON or the 49(6/7)0 extreme edition

yeah, but what is the real benefit of spending 300 dollars that doesn't even really upgrade anything

Upgrade GPU, then somewhere down the line get a Xeon
