Hello,

Why is my R9 290 dropping GPU usage? It didnt even reach 70º so why is constantly dropping some Mhz and sometimes for several times dropping GPU Usage to 0%, 50%, 70% (Its random)

Iv'e put my fan on 70%, so temp should not be an issue.

I take this print after benchmark on Ungine Valley:

m6HBZj6.png

It happens with any game. CS:GO, Batman Origins, Assassin's Creed 3, Lego Marvel and Dishonored.

This are the games i tested. Is always dropping the GPU Usage and cause some FPS Drop.

It happen with other R9 290 too?

I was about to WaterCool this card but if is a problem that this card have i need to get a new one.

Thanks for the help

Are you using the AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta 9.5 driver?

Going to guess you probably just didn't NEED to run that fast. You're just gaming, why would it be running at 100% all the time? OR are you actually getting poor performance.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Does your GPU not run at 99-100% all the time when gaming?

It is driver issue, i have exactly same thing.

I never felt the need to check. But my CPU sure as hell doesn't, so I simply assumed a similar situation. If you're standing still in a grey room for 10 seconds, why would a GPU be running full tilt?

It should always run at 99% or 100% when gaming in this titles. I try on CS 1.6 and ofc that the GPU Usage was always at 0% with 100FPS.

But in this new titles that should always be 99%-100%

It is driver issue, i have exactly same thing.

Did you had the other drivers? There is any driver for R9 290 that is not in beta?

Your CPU shouldn't be running at 100% but your GPU should so it pushes the most amount of frames it can.

Eh, that's a good point actually, had not thought of that.

I have a i7 3770k overclock at 4.2Ghz

do u get frame stutter or frame drops? anything wrong?

Yes he drops a few frames when going to 0%-80%, is fast but is a bit noticeable if you are looking at the MSI AB Information when Benchmark is running

An i7 is definitely not necking your card, it may be the cards bios, or drivers.

I installed the driver that Sapphire have on their website.

On Catalyst i have the Bios: 015.041.000.000

---

I see you have a R9 290. Can you run Ungine Valley and see what score you get on Extreme HD?

And if you get that up and down reads on MSI AB after the benchmark.

I can't right now as i am not at my main PC, but i use a custom cooler on my card, so my results are not really comparable to most others.

I would like to mention that i had a small issue with CS:GO myself, my card would not stay in 3D clocks causing some stuttering, but i fixed it for the most part by increasing eye candy in the drivers.

+ 1  increase the power limit. Your card is definitely throttling. Try the same test with + 10% power limit.
