I am currently running an FX-6300 and a GTX 660, with a single 1080p monitor. It's alright for right now, but in newer games it's starting to slow down, and running Plex in the background taxes the CPU. I'm thinking of upgrading to Ryzen, but I don't have a lot of money to spend right at the minute, so I was debating the possibility of buying CPU, Motherboard, and RAM first and then upgrading more of the parts down the line? Not too sure, that's why I've come here. TIA :)

The cooler is unnecessary

Could you expand on that a little? I mean, why is it unnecessary?

Firstly, based on your potential new build, you will be wasting more on parts that won’t effect the performance at all. I recommend getting a Ryzen 5 1600 and gtx 1060 6gb for 1000$ build. Something like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8xyCHN without the peripherals. Or if you have enough, this one for 1500$ will be a complete bad-ass!https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2wMkpb

  • CPU
    Ryzen 5 1600 OC 3,7ghz
  • Motherboard
    ASrock AB350 Pro4 ATX
  • RAM

What am I wasting money on? I have had very good experiences with Asus, and am also interested in their Aura system. Most of what you say is "wasted" is on aesthetics which is pretty high on my list. I also don't need an operating system or peripherals

You can get a 1600, 1070 and 16GB RAM, if you are fine with less RGB, and a lesser case and PSU. Stock cooler is fine for Ryzen, the Pro4 has a decent VRM, Ryzen benefits a lot from faster RAM, WD SSDs are crap, and the CXM is fine.  Unless you want the specific case a lot, spending the money elsewhere in the PC makes more sense.

Like I said, would be trying to spend less to begin with, just to get my foot in the door with the platform (remember, I'm using DDR3 RAM right now) with upgrades for small things like that sometime later

Is that PSU in your original build actually a Photon or is it just a stand-in for some other one?

Here's another build that's a better value than what you had for about the same price.

I don't really have any need for that much power... I'm using it for light to moderate gaming, possibly some school work (but I have a MacBook for that) and running a Plex server. Having it look nice is pretty necessary, and upgrades can always be made later on if my use case changes, especially considering AMD's stance on support for the AM4 platform
