Dedicated Repeater vs Wireless Router as repeater

Whic is better, a small dedicated repeater which you plug in on the wall or a full size router used as a repeater at the same price?

In my opinion, and what I am currently using, you will most likely get better performance out of using the full router set in "bridge" mode for extending your wireless connection due to it having beefier hardware inside, along with larger antennas.

While you can often use a router as an Access Point (wired) via bridge mode, only a few support using them as a repeater. If you're going that way make sure you're getting one that supports being used as a repeater.

 

As far as which is better, the performance should be about the same comparing like-like. Wireless repeater performance of a router or a repeater should be comparable and wired access point performance should be comparable.

 

The big difference is going to be in range, and for the router in wired mode whether it's tri-band. A router will have further range on it due to it being a bigger more powerful device.

 

A mesh system (like Google Home) or managed system (like ubiquity's solution) are going to offer an overall better and more performant experience with features like Zero Hand Off Roaming.

 

But if you don't want to invest that much money, buying a repeater is typically the easier/cheaper option.

Running a wired access point would be best.
