is a switch same as an Ethernet switch?

there are some old cheap used models out there, are they fit for home light use? Just less throughtput?

a gigabit switch is really cheap now. For home use you dont need an expensive or second hand when a simple 5-port is < $20

Not all switches will be gigabit, there are older switches that are slow.

There are enterprise switches with features you likely will not need.

Switch is just the term for how it handles traffic so a "Switch" is the same as an "Ethernet Switch"

What you had to look out for were Ethernet Hubs.

 

In short: A switch will direct traffic to where its needed, so when u have a NAS on port 1 and a PC on port 5 it will redirect most packest from 1 to 5 and vice versa if you need the files.

A hub is a dumb device that will just copy all the packets to all the ports. So in the example from before ALL traffic would go to all ports and on very busy networks this would choke the network.

It can, you need to set it as a bridge if you connect it to another router.

On itself the ports will also function as a switch would

well i can use my old router as a bridge(switch) when needed

then ac68u as the main wifi+lan router and a switch at the same time?

I will highly recommend getting you own modem and dumping what im guessing the one you ISP gave you. The modem/router they give out will end up being a bottleneck.

no. the real bottleneck is my hdd, I cant watch all the stuff i downloaded. My actual speed is 90mbps, isp gives 200, my 10/100 router is 1st bottleneck but passing it will serve no benefits for now...

Then if you old router supports it set up a DMZ to the new router to prevent port forwarding problems.

I really doubt your HDD is the bottleneck. Most modern hard drives can easily saturate a 1Gb/s Ethernet connection by themselves. I think you're mixing up MB (megabyte) bs Mb (Megabit). ISPs usually use Mb/s to measure speeds. Your 200 Mb/s connection is actually 25MB/s (8 Megabits in a Megabyte). Your hard drive is probably 90 MB/s or more easily.

 

1Gb/s Ethernet tops out at 125MB/s.

Ah, sorry for misunderstanding.

 

Yeah, hard drive space makes more sense. I have a server and yeah, space goes fast.

 

Hmm, I would honestly just pick up a Netgear 4 or 8 port Prosafe switch. They work great. I wouldn't try to mess with turning a router into a switch unless I really had to.
