I know that nothing is official yet, but is there any information in regards to the Z370 platform and future compatibility?

I know, intel - haha, dead socket jokes etc but I'm genuinely asking. I'm considering getting a Coffee Lake build, but being that it's already a 1151 refresh I'm a bit scared that it may legitimately actually be a dead socket, with Cannon Lake supposedly coming next year - unless Cannon Lake/Ice Lake whichever comes next will also be compatible on Z370?

I'm not expecting this board to last me the rest of my life, but it would give me some comfort to know I at least have two sets of chips on the board like 1150 got the 4770k and later the 4790k.

I'm not being a fan boy, but please don't bother suggesting Ryzen - I actually just ended up RMA'ing a Ryzen setup that was nothing but problematic. Nothing against AMD - I love them just as much as Intel without preferring one over the other -  I'm actually running an FX 8350 as we speak, but the experience has turned me away from Ryzen for the time.

Cannonlake will work on Z370. I cannot say why I know this, just know that it's true. Icelake on the other hand, I've seen no information on it working for Z370, but it's possible I suppose.

Covfefe Lake -> Ice Lake -> Cannonlake

Ice Lake is Z390 only

I cannot say. I only know that it does. I know, people hate cryptic posts that offer zero proof, but if it helps, I can provide each and every CFL "prediction" I made that came out to be true (with 100% accuracy).

I hope you're right. I would really hate to buy a z370 coffee lake setup now, just to find out that Coffee Lake will be the only chip supported on the platform. It's just a little scary being that it's technically the 3rd batch of chips on the 1151 platform, and the possibility of a 4th one being supported has me a bit paranoid/skeptical. Please let your cryptic knowledge be correct. I recently read an article, I don't remember what site I was killing time during a lunch break at work - that rumored there will be an 8 core chip available for Z370 sometime late 2018. It was just a rumor article of course, so there's not much credibility - but I really want to believe that's true.

So this is where it gets tricky. With CFL coming in the first week of Oct, the 8700k is going to be it's flagship. Now, the 8 core thing was extremely recent, even I did not know it, and I know "things and stuff". To my knowledge, we was not slated to see 8 core consumer Intel chips until Ice Lake, but Ice Lake is not slated to be released in 2018, at least not according to what I've heard. Cannonlake is still going to be a thing in 2018, and Ice Lake will be the new architecture on 10nm+, and I just don't see Intel releasing it anywhere near CFL and Cannonlake. I'd say mid-2019 at best. As for whether or not CFL will have 8 cores, I personally don't believe it. Now that is not a guarantee, and I can certainly be wrong on that part. I suppose we will find that out together later on.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't believe it CFL will have an 8 core chip either - but that doesn't stop me from wanting to believe it haha. I'm kinda torn. I want to get CFL because frankly, I'm tired of this FX 8350 but at the same time, I'd hate to get CFL 6 core now with an 8 core being rumored for a year later. Mostly because with Ryzen having 8 cores readily available and the next gen of consoles using a modified 8 core Ryzen, I know there's the old saying if you wait now, you'll wait forever there's something better around the corner, but those cores are tempting. I wouldn't be surprised if future games will finally start to make use of more cores. I know the same thing was said with ps3/xbox 360 having 8 cores, but it seems more likely this time around.

Here's the article I was referring to

http://wccftech.com/intel-coffee-lake-300-series-z370-z390-chipset-leak/

But it's wccftech, I tend to view them as the TMZ of the tech world.

About halfway down, it says:

"So we are looking at atleast a year worth of wait if not more. There’s also a possibility that while this chipset (Z390) allows for more features over Z370, it may also launch along side a new range of refreshed processors (most probably still on 14nm++ process). Regardless, the Z390 and Z370 chipsets will use the LGA 1151v2 socket and compatibility of Coffee Lake processors will be maintained on both."

That very last sentence makes me cling to hope, but again - considering the source, it's so far from reliable it might as well be an article on Kim Kardashians new shoes.

But that doesn't mean that Z370 will support something else besides covfefe.

I don't think the 370 series will work with cannon lake or ice lake or whatever comes after covfefe.

That's the thing I'm afraid of. I want to get Coffee Lake, but I also don't want to be on a 1 chip socket. Part of me thinks it will be 1 chip just because it's a kaby refresh, but on the other hand Intel really can't afford the publicity loss at this point if they were to release z370 and make it a dead platform from release. Mock them all you want, but I'd think they would have more sense than that.
