I don't understand the idea that went into the design of this CPU water block. Can somebody please explain how this would cool a CPU well? It doesn't look like the conventional way to do it, but I'm inexperienced in WC.

I'm not 100% sure which design feature you're asking about... the snake shaped channel allows the water to flow from the input across as much of the transfer portion of the block as possible, ensuring the best transfer of heat from the block to the water.

Would work. Looks old. Surprised you could get it to mount to any recent chips. Wouldn't buy it for any reason.

Called a maze style block. Highly restrictive, and very ineffective compared to modern designs. 

 

It was easier and cheaper to manufacture than modern stuff. You COULD make one on your own with a basic CNC

That design went out of fashion 10 years ago in favor of jet plate blocks (although I think between maze and jet plate there was pin grid)
