Vega or 1080

I have a freesync monitor so I wanted to know weather I should get a v64 at $500 or a 1080 at 520 paired with a ryzen 7 1700

That was the intended release price, but miners swept up the market and now vega retails for 600-700 usd.  Go for the 1080ti just because you would have to wait 2 years for vega to realistically go back down. EDIT: If money isn't a problem and you really want the freesync, just buy vega but mae sure your system (psu) can handle it.

or get the vega 56, thats atleast a better value deal in comparison to the 64 and the spare money would be free to spend on fancy rgb, (weed,) more games, a dvd drive, an sli setup or weed

I'd get the Vega 64 if you can get it at normal price. Better performance even with early drivers, better heating for the winter... etc.etc

FastSync will keep the monitor refresh rate the same, I believe. It may remove tearing, but it does not render FreeSync pointless (especially if the minimum frame rates are dropping below the refresh rate).

If you have the power budget, I'd say Vega. I wish TVs had Freesync because it's lovely for video (allows for judder-free playback of 24Hz, 25Hz, 50Hz, etc. material). The only thing I see missing in Vega is VP9 decode support (and maybe PlayReady 3.0 support).

Sadly there is just no reason to consider Vega at this point.  They are inferior to their equivalent Nvidia counterpart.  

 

Get a 1080 or 1070

What resolution are you running? If its just 1080p, get the 1070 or V56(if you can find one). 1440 or 1080p 144Hz, get the 1080. Don't even bother with that freesync until RTG comes up with a decent GPU that can actually make use of it.

Vega if you have Freesync and buying now, it's got 1080 performance although suffers with more heat from that TDP.

1080. Price of Vega 64 is way too high to even consider, even if you have Freesync.

Whilst the performance of Vega can be comparable to a GTX 1080 and sometimes better I could never recommend the reference version. It's just rubbish compared to the reference 1080.

Freesync is also useful outside of 3D. Full screen videos can benefit from perfect cadence. I love how I get to view videos of different frame rates with no judder without manually switching the monitor refresh rate to match.

Freesync and fast sync are 2 entirely different things, and you should learn them ;-)

Fast Sync only makes "sense"; if you have at least 2x your monitors Hz as fps.

Freesync works, when you have LESS fps than your monitors Hz. Without Freesync, it will be impossible to get a game smooth, other then reducing settings untill you get fps > hz.

Which weill be difficult with a 144 Hz screen (where you would need 288 fps for Fast Sync to work really really well)

If your fps are too low with Fast Sync (if you have lower fps than Hz), fast sync is entirely pointless. It will take Tearing away, but you WILL get stuttering and Input lag.. So you can just stick to V-Sync there.

 

Variable Refresh Rate > Everything.

Which means: Vega is your choice. But i would go for a Vega 56 Custom, and optimize it (overclock + undervolt. The Additional Shaders don't scale well with Games)

 

But yea, depends on the exact Monitor. If it's a mere 60 Hz Monitor, you can ignore that. Because it's piss easy to get a 60 fps Lock, which you basicly need in order to get a Game "smooth" (even frametimes without frame stuttering or tearing. 60 fps on 60 Hz, V-Sync ON).

With Freesync, you would simply get the option, to have a perfectly smooth experience (with even frametimes) below 60 fps too. 55 fps, 50 fps, 45 fps.. Whatever you can cap the game to.

 

45 fps with Variable Refersh Rate feels MUCH better/smoother, than 57 fps with V- Sync on and stuttering. Or V-Sync off and tearing.
