Cheap Raid 0

So i have 100 bucks on Amazon and i just thought about doing a cheap raid. so i have found these harddrives and i was going to get 4 of them with THIS raid controller. 

Is this a good idea at all?

Remember! The EPS connector goes to the drive's maguffin, don't forget. 

 

I wouldn't use that drive. I would get some 500GB Seagate Constellations(?) for around the $30 mark. Get three and do a RAID 5 for 1TB usable and 500GB parity drive.

RAID isn't that hard to configure, especially if you run a Mac or Pro Windows.  You can find lots of guides online and I'm pretty sure Linus has a video on RAID.

Seems like a waist of energy and storage space. with 4 of those in Raid 0 I would expect 350-400MBps read write rates and a huge level of failure.

If you just want to string a ton of junk together for fun, just pick up a powered USB 3.0 hub and some thumb drives. 

MAC supports USB RAID if I remember right, Windows will let you create a virtual disk on each and just raid the virtual disks into one. 

 

just my 2c on it. (side note why the raid controller? Most boards have one built in and software raid is available in Windows/Mac/Linux/BSD etc...)
