Raid

Yazoofiend

Can someone explain to me what raid is in a simple way and what the different types of raids are and what differences they make? I've just always wondered.

The main types are:

  • RAID 0, which combines all drives into one big virtual drive, increasing performance and the likelihood of failure, since a problem with any of the physical drives means you lose everything on the virtual drive.  The amount of space you get is equal to all drives combined*
  • RAID 1, which combines multiple drives by putting identical information on all of them, increasing reliability since to lose everything you would have to lose all of your physical drives, not just one.  The amount of space you get is equal to your smallest physical drive.
  • RAID 5 & 6, which does a sort of cross between the two, allowing you to lose 1 or 2 physical drives without losing any data, but giving you capacity greater than any of the physical drives, but less than you would get with all of them combined in RAID 0.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.
