I5 4460 upgrade?

Hey guys!

I am thinking of upgrading my i5-4460 to something like a i5-6600, i5-7600 or a i5-7400.

I switched my gtx 970 for a 1070 recently, but I noticed that my fps hasn't increased a lot, or at all.

It seems like my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu, and since I got some kind of budget to upgrade, I thought it would be a great idea.

Is it worth it to upgrade from my I5-4460? I have arround €200/€250 to spend on the cpu.

Will it have a big impact on my fps? Is it worth it?

Full spec list:

Cpu: I5 4460

Gpu: Msi geforce gtx 1070 gaming

ram: 16 gb hyperX ddr3 ram

mob: MSI h97 PC mate

If you can find a used i7 4770/ i7 4790 on Ebay then that would make more sense than upgrading to a newer i5.

Best course of action as stated is a second hand i7 4770 or 4790 on your existing motherboard.

If you want a new system it either is wait for coffee lake or build a Ryzen 5 1600 based system

So you guys are telling me buying a newer I5 is useless?

Can it be possible that there's something wrong with my computer?

How should a I5 4460 perform combined with a gtx 1070?

In H1Z1 I'm below 60 fps very frequently, not talking about gta 5...

Is a upgrade even necessary?

New i5s are maybe 5% better. Intel hasn't really done anything massive in the past few years, just teeny IPC and clock speed improvements. There's very little difference between my Sandy Bridge i5 (getting replaced with an even older Xeon since I get a ton of stutter in games) and new ones.

@Zando Bob okay, I get it. upgrading to another I5 won't improve performance a lot.

Why am I not getting way over 60 fps in H1Z1 and gta 5?

Shouldnt I get way higher fps? I'm playing on a 2560x1080 ultrawide monitor from LG.

If a upgrade isn't necessary, is it normal for this combo to perform so bad?

Also, @Princess Cadence, will upgrading to a used I7 give a performance boost?

You either want to get a use 4770 or 4790, go for a 6 or 8 core ryzen or get a coffee lake 8600k or 8700k. I5s right now aren't worth the upgrade.

H1Z1 is horribly optimized and GTA V is very CPU intensive.

Upgrading to a 4790(K), 4770(K) or a Ryzen 5 1600 will resolve the performance issues. Just don't get an i5, it is not an upgrade ;)

I have a similar i5 and 980 Ti, so basically older equivalents of your setup. I play at 1080p and still get fps drops from my normal 90+ to 40 or less, and I also get micro stutter. And all I have open is discord. Definitely look for a used i7, more threads should help. I'll know that for sure once I get my 4c/8t Xeon rig up and running this weekend.

Yes you're being bottlenecked. Yes, less than 60 is probably to be expected at times. No,  going for another 4 core chip doesnt make sense. 4 core chips are on their way out the door. If you want to spend i5 money, wait a month and get a 6 core chip for the same price. If you want it NOW then go Ryzen 5 1600 and overclock it to a fixed 3.8ghz on all 6 cores and be happy. In no circumstance is the 7600k the right choice for anyone.

Obviously all games can use more than 4 threads, so imagine your currect i5 with only 4 threads has to manage share scarce resources between the game engine and windows and other background applications and all it is just choking.

i7's will double your threads to 8 total which will allow the GTX 1070 to work on its peak.

@SlaughterSmurf I guess I'll just wait for the 8th gen I5. If these turn out to also not give a big performace boost, I guess I'll go with a refurbished i7 4790k or a ryzen 5.

I dont have that much money, and I dont really want to spend more than €300 on the whole upgrade (including motherboard).

Thanks for the advice @Zando Bob, @Princess Cadence, @deXxterlab97, @PCGuy_5960

get a i7 4790 non k, the k allows overclock while your mobo can not

unless they go cheap

or get xeon 1231v3 or xeon 1240 v3
