I am going to start a polyphasic sleep pattern. I've always been the guy that doesn't need much sleep and during finals everyone's jealous of how much free time I have because I get up early and go to bed late and feel fine. Recently I've started getting a pretty good amount of sleep going to bed at 11 pm and waking up at 6 am I'm going to start by waking up at 5 am and taking a 20-30 minute nap after school at 2:30 pm and see how that goes.

I will update this thread with my findings and how I feel and if you have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you for reading and have a fantastic day!

I thought about polyphasic sleep at one point. I mean the promise of halving sleep time is quite appealing isn't it. Problem is, you do hear plenty of people who've done it say they loved it etc.

Nothing has been done to show if polyphasic sleep is just a fancy way of mitigating the effects of sleep deprivation. What are the actual effects on the body?

It's also worth pointing out that polyphasic sleep is touted as this "more efficient way of sleeping". Problem is, if there is a more efficient way of sleeping, why didn't we evolve towards it naturally?

Hello, this is a funny coincidence, I just posted a sleep related question earlier :D

I have tried polyphasic sleep for about 4 months and technically its not hard to do it, but it comes at a price.

English is not my best language, so I will try to explain it like so:

Normal sleeping time during the night:

100% concentration during the day
100% awareness during the day
100% energy during the day

Sleeping in 3 sessions, 2 hours each:

75% concentration when awake
70% awareness when awake
60% energy during the day

Basically, it's fine if you do it for a week or two when you are busy, but making this a lifestyle - not a good idea...

Because we didn't have the ability to do much stuff night until not very long ago. Evolution happens slowly and if we need sleep and the nights are useless anyway. Why not sleep then? Nowadays this beautiful thing called electricity allows us to do whatever we want whenever we want.

I'd only be doing biphasic sleeping. I'm curious what the affects are on me. This is the morning of the first day and I feel great! I couldn't have known I'd woken up earlier. I mean polyphasic sleeping is done by people all the time. Whenever someone takes a nap during the day that's technically polyphasic sleeping.

If I notice any affects on me I will share them here.

That's not my point. My point is that sleep exposes an animal greatly. They are extremely vulnerable at that time.

If there was a way to cut sleeping time by half or more, it would drastically increase survival rates of a living being.

It's not just a question of "being able to do stuff"

Hmm I learned how to sleep around 4 hours a day for a while but the results were that it triggered normal insomnia for the next few months, great for grinding horrible for high thought power exercises

My 2 cents are if you do a repetitive job and can get away with it it's great, but if you don't have something like that, then stay far away.

I can't say that extra time playing video games isn't nice, but trouble shooting and doing repairs under a microscope suffer big time.

It's the afternoon of day one and if anything felt better. In the morning everyone else was groggy cause they had just gotten up but I had been up for a while and was completely awake, making me way more productive. I don't even feel tired. We will see if this continues.
