Am I under a misonception about my CPU model? Phenom II x4 955

Go to solution Solved by tekgeek1205,

AMD Black Editions have unlocked multipliers and base clocks(FSB). Non-Black Edition's only have Base clocks unlocked. Your validation shows a 19.5 multiplier and stock is like 16 i think. You have a Black Edition.

Then a FX 6300 or 8320 if you can grab them cheap would be your best bet i think, just make sure you have a 6+2 motherboard to handle the load. JDE has a point in that Intel are better for gaming, but again it's only worth it if you can get them cheap. Plus it's locked for overclocking but i don't know if that is an issue ?

2600s are literally selling for $120 right now on eBay

I've seen non overclocking 1155 going for around $60-$70.

Even though you are Team Red, please consider 2nd generation locked i7s. The locked versions and motherboards are cheaper and fit into your budget just fine. IMO better than FX for gaming.

I'm a tweaker. No matter how insignificant the incrimental performance gains are, I like getting ALL I can out of a product. So I gotta be able to mess with things a bit.

If you live in the US, and good PSU can be gotten for 30 dollars, and a good cases for $30-50.

Yup, I'm in the states. A shop nearby has some pretty good looking cases for around that much. I don't need flashy RGB or lighting of any kind. But something that would support an AIO and some additional case fans would be nice.

There's a MicroCenter about an hour away. I've talked it over about making a trip down just to look around. My son's 3 and hes getting pretty interested about watching daddy play with his tech, so a gander around there should get both our minds running with ideas

That's within budget, absolutely. Thanks for that. But again, I gotta get my "it ain't broke but I'll fix it anyway" swings in. I want to do it all in one shot, not spend it now to suffice and get the good stuff soon after. If I could do that, this girl would have a fit with all the extra parts that would laying around. Sure I could put them together and make some back on it, but where's the fun in having a collection if you don't do anything with it? Lol #asklinus

"Nearby" is a strong word when your transporter works 2 jobs 6 days a week. And believe it or not, in our area I'm saving us money by NOT working while we still make just enough

yeah thats unfortunate. but in my shithole city, where the crackheads and heroin addicts mustve all migrated to at once, there isnt a worthwhile tech shop to be found. even our Best Buy doesnt hold stock of individual parts and the mom-n-pop shops are trying to make a buck back so deals are hard to come by. craigslist people overprice their stuff or are of the enthusiast grade in materials and are unwilling to travel. only real option is getting away or going online. online is my best option, but i dont like to wait either. its a rough time of things for first world problems like "i can has good computer"

must be nice. average rent for a 1-2 bedroom small apartment around here is $650-$750. add utilities + car payments + kids and the average monthly pay barely leaves room for anything until taxes come in. then thats almost gone just to make up for whatever was late

Average rent for a 1-2 bedroom small apartment near downtown is about $3000 a month, add the $50 hydro bill (ever increasing) plus overpriced car insurance ($3000-$4000 a year) and gouging for all items in a store leaves room for our great tax rate (up to 60 or 70% for people who make $150000 a year and even more for people who make more)
