Value of an Intel Core i5 6500

Hi!

So I was a dummy when I selected my first processor on my current build, and bought a motherboard that supported overclocking, but didn't buy an unlocked processor (even though the K sku was only $40 more than the $200 I paid...)

Anyway, I have learned a lot since then, and also want to boost my performance a little bit.  But I'm not sure that I want to drop $240 on a new processor (looking at the 7600k since then I wouldn't have to get a new motherboard).

Then I thought about selling my current processor, but I have no idea if people would buy one used, and if so, for how much.  Currently it's sold new for around $180-200 USD, so I know it will need to go for less than that.  My CPU has had 1.5 years of medium use, never been overclocked (obviously), and kept reasonably cool the whole time.

My question to you all is: should I sell my CPU given this information, and if so, for how much?

Thanks again for the help. If this is the wrong place for this post, mods, please feel free to move it.

i5 6500 value is roughly 120-140, but don't buy another i5, they're kinda not the greatest, get the i7 7700K after the i7 8700K comes out, there should be some price different after a month or so, as retailers want rid of old stock usually.

Yours faithfully

I dont know exactly the price of a 6500, but you'd better sell it now if you can. After Coffee Lake's launch old quad cores will plummet in price. Of course this means buying used quad cores after Coffee Lake is a much better deal than it is now.

Won't be easy to sell an used i5 6500... you should have gone i7 6700 + h110m then your CPU would still be high end gaming relevant for today :/

Or buy it used, which is probably the best idea since I doubt retailers will sell it for cheaper (never did with 4790k and 6700k). Used you might be able to pick it up for $250 ish

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

You can probably still overclock the 6500 if you're willing to roll back your bios (unless you're still on the old one) and fiddle with it, asuming your board supports it. It will only let you OC the BCLK, but I've read some ppl got to 4.4 stable. A small amount of googling will net you a lot of info on this if you're interested.

Really? I saw some in the UK sell of their i7 6700K stocks since the i7 7700K was the same but an extra 200MHz, no brainer to get really.

Yours faithfully

I got an i5 6400 to 4.7GHz with some tweaking.

Correct, but I'm not doing anything at 4k, so I'm fine most of the time.

The only bottleneck I really hit was trying to run Mass Effect Andromeda at Ultra settings.  I was getting 60FPS after a few tweaks, but random drops at certain points that I noticed coincided with near 100% CPU usage.

You're right, I probably can, but I don't really want to go that deep for right now, since I'm fairly new to overclocking and I do also use this PC for work so I want some level of stability.

I appreciate the recommendation, but I'm not trying to spend that much right now.  TBH, my 6500 has treated me well until very recently.

You're kinda stuck in the Intel Eco system at the moment, spending much is something Intel would very much like.

This is true.  If I had built my PC this year, I probably would have gone for an AMD processor.  But right now I don't feel like changing my motherboard until I have to.

Once the motherboard dies or there are no good LGA1151 chips (whichever happens first), then I'll see who's got the best offering.

Well there are only as many LGA 1151 chips that will work with your board as of right now, so the i7 7700K is the "best" chip that will work with it, albeit with a probable BIOS update needed. I understand the not wanting to change boards, but I think you can get an overclockabe Ryzen 4 core chip and board for the same as an i7 7700k. Idk if you can get the lowest end Ryzen 5 chip and said board, depends on who you buy from.
