The d5500 strikes me as more reliable for what you want to do. You also get to invest into nikon glass which is a more complete ecosystem than sony.

my rule of thumb when it comes to people asking to buy nikon or canon or other DSLR cameras, is do they know someone who has alot of lenses? if so, go with the same brand and you can borrow eachothers lenses, in a way cutting costs.

Have you tried to perform a sudden temporary interrupt of the electricity flow to your computational device followed by a re-initialization procedure of the central processing unit and associated components?

I have quite a few lenses that I'd let people borrow... but the thing is I also have a 10-24 Nikkor lens that I have to take cash deposits for after someone broke it once. :(

On topic Though, I'm a huge fan of the D5500.

had the d5500 recently as a loaner as my d3300 still has a weird error, it's a brilliant camera but the 18-55 is bullshit as a lens IMO, really takes away much of the sharpness the body is capable off. It's light, has good battery life, reasonable compact for a dslr, good ergonomics, I would buy one instantly if I would be ready to drop that much more cash over the d3300.
