Hi I have an MSI GS63VR laptop.  it came with a 256gb PCIE ssd and a 1tb 7200rpm hdd.  I want to purchase a 1tb Samsung NVME ssd for the boot drive, and I will be getting a 850 evo 2tb drive for mass storage and games etc.  My question is if I rip out the original boot drive and do a fresh Windows 10 install, do I need to download all the drivers for the video card, thunderbolt port, speakers basically every single driver?  Or even if I get new ssd's for both sockets will any of the correct drivers still be there?  Sorry if this is an easy question, I'm getting more knowledgeable with gaming computers but drivers and upgrading ssd's is confusing me on all what I need to do after the drives are switched.  If it matters it has a i7 6700hq, gtx 1060, hdmi 2.0 port, displayport 1.2, thunderbolt 3 port, 3 usb 3's, 1 usb 2, and 1 mic and 1 headphone jack.  Any help would be AMAZING!!!!  Just don't want to rip out the original stuff until I know I wont screw my pc totally.  Thanks everyone!

Yep, if you pull the original SSD and replace it with something else it doesn't matter what you replace it with.  You will still need to go thru the driver reinstall process.  I would start with creating a Windows Media Creation Tool first before pulling the SSD.

After creating the Windows Media Creation Tool, then I would feel safe pulling the SSD.  Pulling the second drive is not necessary but I would pull it anyway so that when I booted from the Tool, the only drive in the system would be the new, replacement SSD.

If you are installing Windows 10, the NVMe support should be native. So you can swap it easily. What you will lack, if they are both Samsung, will be Samsung Magician software which you need to download later but that doesn't stop anything from working, it's more for checking everything is doing good.

About driver, I suggest you head over to MSI site, search your model, and download all the latest drivers they have for your computer. Put them in a USB stick, and install them later after formatting.

W10 should download all the needed drivers by itself after you complete the setup and start the windows update feature, but it's better to have a manual copy of all that might be needed.

Awesome thank you very much for the quick reply.  Just wondering also, when I go to MSI's site, how do I download all the drivers onto the usb stick?  I haven't figured out how to download the drivers correctly.  This computer had WinZip but I uninstalled that and someone told me WinRawr is better.  But ya what is the correct way to download drivers onto the stick.  Also if you have time to type a short list of the correct steps before I take out the old drives to do, and a small list of what to do after I install the new drives.  Again thank you very much for the quick replies.  PC stuff is so confusing!  There is so much to learn

That is a good idea for sure.  I just kind of wanted to do a brand new fresh install.  There is some bloatware that I'm not sure if I should uninstall or not.  So I figured a fresh install would be best so I can pick what I want on the pc.  But I guess if I clone it then I can just learn what to uninstall and what to keep

Well if you want a fresh install then by all means go ahead, its a good thing to know how to do anyway and yeah, it allows you to customise your machine with only software that want/need.

Its really not that hard and once you've done it you'll know how it works ;)

I would actually really recommend using a drive cloning tool to clone your OS ssd over to the new one if you havve 2 m.2 slots to save yourself the hasel of reinstalling windows and drivers. you only have to extend the partition size after cloning and you're done. 2 reboots 10 min

Primary System

  • CPU
    Ryzen R6 5700X
  • Motherboard
    MSI B350M mortar arctic
  • RAM
    32GB Corsair RGB 3600MT/s CAS18
  • GPU
    Zotac RTX 3070 OC
  • Case
    kind of a mess
  • Storage
    WD black NVMe SSD 500GB & 1TB samsung Sata ssd & x 1TB WD blue & x 3TB Seagate
  • PSU
    corsair RM750X white
  • Display(s)
    1440p 21:9 100Hz

For sure.  It just comes down to the drivers I need.  That is still confusing me.   Like how to download it into WinRawr and then actually making it apply to the pc.

Its simple, each piece of hardware on your machine will have its own driver (so things like motherboard (aka Chipset), graphics card, network, wireless, Bluetooth, track pad etc), you'll download them as a zip file, once extracted each driver will have an exe that you run, it will install like any other windows app and once its finished the corresponding hardware will work (some might need a restart).

Some general tips, create a folder for each driver and keep them separated (so download Chipset driver to a folder called Chipset, Audio to a folder called Audio etc), run them one at a time waiting for one to finish before running the next, do your network/wireless last (so windows update doesn't interfere with the process) and reboot once they're all installed.

Ok awesome thank you very much for everyone telling me all this info.  I seriously appreciate it.  Believe me I know this stuff should be simple enough, but for some reason since I'm still new to the whole pc building and upgrading etc, its a lot to take in.  Also I always worry about downloading the wrong driver or whatever and bricking my laptop.  But jw in the future if I had another question and ask it on this post I did, will you all get a notification that I have asked something?  Just wondering if in case I have a few small details I need help with if I can ask ya again.  You all have been crazy good help!

I only have 1 m.2 slot that supports NVME.  The other is for a 2.5 inch ssd

that's unfortunate it would be much easier. (you can still do it with an extra step cloning to the 1TB HDD than to the new SSD but it's not as convenient anymore).

I'm mostly saying this because some laptop software doesn't reinstall properly when you do it yourself. I have a DELL laptop that has a fingerprint sensor that i can't get to work as a login method anymore because the software only loads after I'm in session already after a clean install.

Remember, its almost impossible to brick your PC through software (the only thing I can think of offhand is a bios/uefi update), most drivers will refuse to install if they're not compatible but even if non compatible drivers do install they won't do anything more than (maybe) make Windows a bit unstable, usually they'll do nothing at all and Windows will just ignore them.

I do not suggest cloning, if you don't have important data that cannot be transfered easily. Go for a clean instal..

Go to the MSI site and select your model: https://www.msi.com/search/GS63VR/product/1/

Click DOWNLOAD, then DRIVER

Select W10 64bit

Now, you have the list of all drivers for your model. Instead of thinking of them like "a magical box", think of drivers like a normal software. You download it, run the .exe, and press "next". When asked, reboot. That's all.

Download the latest version of all the drivers that are in the list in a folder, put that folder into a USB stick. I also suggest to put a 7zip installer in that folder too (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html) so you can unzip/unrar anything.

Keep in mind, that with windows update most of these drivers will be automatically downloaded and installed on their own after you finish the OS install. If you try to re-install a driver which is already installed, you'll be given a notification or error, but nothing will go wrong.

Normally, after you do a clean install of Windows 10, it would provide you with basic drivers to get your laptop's basic components working (including your NVMe and ThunderBolt 3 drivers) though it is always recommended to update them afterwards. Sometimes, they would not provide you with a driver at all, leaving you with "!" in Device Manager, which would then require you to find the driver manually. If you do clean install however, you will lose the OEM recovery partition so to prevent it, you need to clone it. If you don't care about the OEM recovery partition, just install away :)
