Worth upgrading i5 6400?

Hi just need some advice I currently have a i5 6400 paired with gtx 1070 is it worth upgrading to say either i5 7600k or i7 7700k I only play games not much else or am I wasting cash thanks

the clock speed difference between an i5 6400 and an i7-7700k overclocked is substantial tho

only upgrade would be a 6700/7700(K) or a full platform swap to Ryzen 7

There are only two cases where I think it makes any sense:

 

1. You game on a 144 Hz monitor at 1080p - Then your cpu is likely holding back your performance in a lot of games considering how strong a 1070 is.

2. You're into emulation - A Skylake chip at around 4.5 GHz can for example run Zelda BOTW in CEMU at a pretty consistent 30 fps most of the time while with an i5 at 3.2 GHz turbo boost you're going to be in the mid to low 20s a lot.

CEMU is still in development. Optimizations need to be made. 

 

@WinChickD What are your full specs? Do you have a Z170/Z270? If you do, go for the 7700K. If not, 6700/7700.

Get the 7700 or 6700. The unlocked processor would go to waste.

I just mean right now when it comes to CEMU. Also, even with a non Z-series board he can run a 7700k at 4.5 GHz on all cores if the BIOS has enhanced turbo, and likely at least 4.3 GHz on all cores if not, while the 7700 is 300 MHz slower.

That's true. Would be worth it if possible.
