Pc can boot into bios but not windows

Hkh

Today my pc wouldn't boot. The asus logo comes up, I can get into the bios, but when the windows login screen is supposed to appear tge screen stays black. I know windows is running because my keyboard loads the lighting profile and the pc goes into power saving mode. I tried getting into safe mode to update the gpu drivers, but when I tried to get into recovery mode by forcefully turning off my pc 3 times in a row nothing happens. So either recovery mode loaded but also displayed a black screen or it didn't load at all. Help me please

System specs:

Asus rog VIII Heri

Intel i7 6700k

Evga ftw gtx 1070

Cooler Master v750

Samsung 850 evo

This is interesting. Do you have any other bootable media to test with? Preferably a windows install disk. Or any other computers you could create one with?

Computers r fun

Agree, this is yet one more reason to keep a linux LIVE USB handy, to test if it's a windows problem or system problem in general.

Ok, ubuntu is running well. But in the system overview instead of my 1070 it says "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe" Is that normal or does it indicate a problem with my gpu? @paddy-stone

I think that's just to do with what drivers it's using. I don't know for definite.

I would say wer'e probably dealing with an OC issue or something... could be related to EFI boot maybe, not enough info to say for definite. At least we know it's most likely software related. Reset CMOS and try to boot into windows again.

Now I'm just plain confused. I reset the cmos, booted the system, the American Megatrends screen appeared, I got into the bios, set my boot drives and booted into windows. Then a windows 10 logo appeared with a loading wheel (this has never happened before in my time owning this pc) and it went to black screen. I haven't been abled to replicate that result. I may start swapping out components of my system to see what's wrong. @paddy-stone
