Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition

Motherboard: Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha

CPU: Intel i7 6700K

Cooling: Corsair AIO H100

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2133

SSD: Samsung EVO M.2  500GB

HDD 1:  WD 6TB (for games)

HDD 2: WD 300 GB for Virtual Machine 1

HDD 3: Seagate 500 GB for Virtual Machine 2

PSU: Corsair RMx1000, started with a Corsair AXi 860 but, was not powerful enough to keep computer running while gaming

Keyboard: Corsair Gaming K70

Mouse: Logitech M570 trackball

Monitor: Samsung 42" TV

 

Would like to upgrade video card to a GTX 1080

Sounds more like you had a defective power supply than one that didn't provide enough power.

Nothing in your system would draw nearly enough power to warrant a 1000W PSU.

What - an 860 Watt PSU? Just a note- but you left out GPU/ expansion cards.

860 watts is enough for 1080 ti sli... I don't see how it wouldn't be enough.
