GTX 1080 or RX Vega

Cyrel

I have ordered a GTX 1080 on Amazon, but after seeing all those Vega hype, I am considering to cancel the order and wait for Vega a bit.

I got an i5 6600k, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 960. Probably going to do 1080p gaming for a while, but also streaming, rendering etc. And what is the best for long term?

Your CPU will bottleneck both GPUs though... I would personally go with an used 980ti if you're not upgrading your CPU just yet.

long term amd wins hands down because driver optimization and finewine

wait for vega, its almost here while probably providing better price/performance for now

personally I think the 1080 is still not a bad option, it has a much lower TDP, and the performance of VEGA isn't that much better if at all. you can go for vega if you really want to, but I don't think it is a must have.

also, I don't think your CPU is a bottleneck at all, perhaps just slightly in 1080p but I wouldn't worry about it.

You think so?

I think he would be fine, especially with an overclock.

The CPU is overclocked to 4.6 GHz, cool n all.

I just realised that i will have to upgrade my PSU in case I get Vega too, considering that some of my friends told me to get a 1080Ti instead, I dunno... My budget is ready for 1080 already.

I am eyeing a vega 64 with my 750W Corsair PSU (80+ Bronze) and that should be fine for it with the rest of my system.

However, if you aren't locked to free sync, I would just suggest the 1080 since you can easily get AIBs for cheap.

Vega 64 creeps up to that cost with the STOCK cooler on it.

However, we don't know final performance yet either.

I am locked to Free sync, so I am sticking with AMD.

Vega is said to be at best on par with the GTX 1080 in terms of gaming. I would say GTX 1080 for a few reasons.

  • Lower power consumption (less thermal exhaust)
  • Shadowplay
  • Gamestream
  • More selection
  • More supply

Also, Fry's flubbed up and listed the Vega 64 at $599 rather than the $499 MSRP. Who knows if that'll stick, especially with the cryptocurrency craze going around. Best case scenario, Vega 64 should cost as much as a GTX 1080.

I don't see the harm in waiting though, especially since you have an interest in rendering. Without official benchmarks, it's hard to say where the Vega 64 will lay. If you're serious about 3d rendering, and Vega 64 ends up being better than the GTX 1080 in that aspect, perhaps that'll be the element that tips you in the other direction. Also, waiting for Vega 64 to drop may influence manufacturers to do promos and rebates on the GTX 1080.

How many watts does your PSU push? Also, is it at least 80+ bronze?

If you're around the 550w mark, then you should be ok. I'm currently running 2 GTX 1080Ti's on a 750w 80+ Gold PSU, and my system holds up when I'm pushing a 4.4GHz OC on my 5820k and a +120MHz core +400MHz mem OC on both GPUs. It's also driving 4 HDDs, 2 SSDs, a DVD/BD drive, 5 120mm fans, a SoundBlaster Z, and a radiator pump.

Can we just freaking wait 1½ days for the benchmarks. Why are we judging based on leaks when the real numbers are hours away.

Oh if you have to replace your PSU then get a 1080, or a 1080ti.
