Rig upgrade 2017

Previously this year, I upgraded to a 1080Ti, and now it's time for a CPU upgrade. I currently have a 4790k, and it's served me well. But, I need more cores. I also need thunderbolt. And this is my issue. I don't want to drop $1200 on an Intel x299/x99 system just so I can have more cores and thunderbolt. This is where I look at AMD, where I can spend only $700 for more cores. I'm trying to decide between the i9-7920X and the R7-1700. I'd love to keep the budget low, but I don't know that I can get thunderbolt in an AMD system.

The 7920X costs $1200 and the 1700 costs $300 or less  

 

If you need more cores, get a 1700 and overclock it, especially if you're on a budget

Isn't the 7900x the $1200 one?

You can't get TB on AMD right now. Also, why aren't you looking at the Threadripper 1920x and 1950x instead of the 7920x? Cheaper and more cores

Threadripper has too many cores for my needs

Yes it will be a good processor basically an i7 7700k with 2 extra hyper-threaded cores ^^

No, the 7900X costs $1000.

Oh, then wait for Coffeelake. It will be 6C/12T and it should have similar multicore performance to an R7 if you OC it.
