Switching HD 6950 -> R9 290 - Windows reinstall recommended?

Hi guys,

I am about to switch from an HD 6950 to an R9 290. Simple question: Should I reinstall Windows or will it be fine? There will be no other changes hardwarewise.

Regards,

Tataffe

Absolutely not. Just switch the cards and keep drivers to date. There are no needed changes for the modification.

pop in the new card and download the latest drivers and you're good to go!

gpu doesn't change how windows might need to be run so no need to reinstall the os

I personally like to reinstall windows for everything (so fresh. wow.), but it's really unnecessary, especially when you have a bunch of files and frequently played games.

I'd reinstall the drivers though!

btw, I voted "No, should be fine"

It should be fine, I switched from 9600GT to GTX660 without any problem, just wipe the old drivers with Driver Sweeper and do a clean install of new drivers once you put the new card in.

No, you only need to do the regular AMD driver uninstalling ritual like pic below.

Ok seriously, uninstall thru Control Panel and then use DriverFusion to remove remaining AMD driver traces. Shutdown your PC and then install your new card, boot up and install the driver. Profit.

:D Yup, my HD4870 definately needed a lot of juice for a successful driver update! Not easy, though to build up that much energy on WinXP back then but I totally did it over and over and over again...yeah.
