How many GPU can you have?

SLI can only use 2 gpu's but you can put as many as you can physically fit on yo the motherboard if you want to use it to render things. 

 

I saw a rig ages ago that used something like 8 (or 10) 980 ti's on one motherboard all with a crazy custom loop, custom mounting and custom gpu blocks for their photo editing job.

On that motherboard you can have 6 but only 2 or 4 in SLI.

That depends on if you're using newer or older cards. GTX 9XX series and older can do four GPUs in SLI, and the GTX 10XX series can only do two GPUs in SLI. That said, it's not really worth going past two GPUs.

There is 3 way and 4 way SLI. Same with Crossfire. Just on that motherboard it seems to be limited to 3 way max judging by the lane splitting in the specs.

Just pointing out that your statement of SLI being limited to 2 way is misinformed, that's all.

It depends on the CPU installed. Different ones have more or less PCIE lanes available. So if you have the full 44 lanes available then 3 way SLI is possible, less and you're limited to 2 way. However you can theoretically run as many GPUs as you have full size PCIE slots, just not in Crossfire or SLI. You could use them for rendering or driving multiple displays.

Also if your looking at X299 you need to watch the amount on PCI-e lanes the CPU can support. Yes you could put 4 GPU's on the motherboard but if you put in a 7640X CPU each GPU would only get 4 lanes and less if you put and NVMe M.2 drive in there as well.

This is why I went with a Mini itx board for my 6800k, I could have gone to a m-atx but I also wanted small.

So short story is you can full all your PCI-e slots with GPU's just you might not see full performance unless your going for a top end CPU from Intel or going for AMD Threadripper.
