Mechanical keyboard advice

Hi,

 

I looking for a decent mechanical keyboard, for programming, casual gaming and writing the odd word document. I want something that doesn't look to 'gamerey'.

 

I don't really mind what switch, although I don't want cherry blues or speeds (or equivalents). I'm thinking either red or brown, but am open to suggestions. I also do not care for RGB, and will probably end up setting it to white. I won't have any use for programmable macro keys.

 

In terms of brand I don't mind, however would prefer to say away from razer.

 

My budget is around $200 NZ (150 US ish), although I could stretch to $250 NZ if there is something better, but would prefer not to.

 

Due to me living in New Zealand, it needs to be available from either: (I don't want  to faff around parallel importing stuff.)

It's better to try keyboard with different switches in retail stores first before buying. They are different from one and other

Get a Masterkeys Pro L, M, or S from CoolerMaster (either white or RGB) with MX Browns. Best switch IMO. Or something with Romer-Gs or a logitech G610 Orion Brown

I highly, highly recommend trying them out in stores before deciding on one.

That said, since you want a white backlight I'd suggest the MasterKeys by Cooler Master.

Really? I find the Browns to feel awful and mushy.

I'd struggle. Shipping stuff to NZ is ultra expensive. Also it might get done for tax on import. Then id be totally screwed.

Yeah, I'd looked at the cooler master ones, although I have had some bad experience with cooler master fans in the past, and cooler master stuff gets promoted a lot on tech you tube channels. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they are terrible, however in my (limited) experience I rarely am happy with stuff that gets alot of advertising (this is probably due to me being fussy, about things.) If people have had good experiences with them, I am more than happy to try one. I just don't fancy wasting money on a keyboard like I did while ago with a scissor switch one that turned out very mushy.

I will definitely try them in store before purchasing, I'm just trying to get an idea about what brands are any good.

I don;t fancy another mush keyboard, my scissor one was alright to start with, however ended up feeling like mud after a year or so.

Haha, that's a pretty small sample size, and one has to wonder how many just bought based on the opinion of others without trying them all

I've tried quite a few (Membranes, scissors, Browns, Blues, Reds, Speeds, Silents, Romer-Gs, and Razer Greens) and don't find the Browns to be mushy at all, IMO linear switches (reds, blacks, speeds, silents) aren't good.

aparently, some stores let u try them instore, but i dont know were u r from so i dont know what stores you have, but anyway search around instore and buy online (its cheaper )

I said in the 1st post in in NZ. nearest best buy/microcentre is 12hr flight away.

Yeah, put the only shop where I live that sells PC parts is pbtech, so the prices are the same online and in store
