Should I get star citizen

MYX

Hello all! Today I'm asking quite a controversial topic but I want to get into star citizen (I love space sims, fps games) and it seemed like the perfect fit. It was just a bit disappointing to see it still in alpha! I know the game has been in delvelopment since the beginning of time and still has some issues to work out, but I'm willing to play this game even though the risk is high. I have played a ton of eve online and too much overwatch and want to try something new! Thanks for reading!

I think you answered it yourself. If you have the curiosity, cash, and no regrets if it doesn't work out since it's high risk, then go for it. I have friends that live it. I haven't had the time, but am interested if it goes 100% live.

I have played way too much high level PvP in this game. I've gone the full circle of hopeful, salty, zen, then hopeful again.

It's a great "game" that has too much going for it to pass up. But it also doesn't have enough going for it to be worth spending money on unless you have the cash to spare.

Guys, I'm a concierge level pledger for Star Citizen, I've a business degree and am currently studying risk assessment.

Lets look at this for a moment unattached to the game in development.

Risk vs Reward

Rewards:

  • Your pledge's qualify as a "gift" IRS link applicable to US only OFC. Seeking clarification on this. Difference in value of gift to amount paid may be tax deductible in some instances, waiting to find out if SC pledges are one of those instances.
  • You get the tradeoff of having supported this game during development to get whatever you pledge incentive was, potentially drastically decreasing your ingame time to achieve the same results if possible. Say mining for resources until you have enough to buy and aurora or cutlass black or 890j in game (I've pledged for all of those btw).
  • You get the satisfaction of having supporting an incredibly ambitious game title
  • New life long friendships forged from being active in the community

Let me explain that last reward more clearly, Star Citizen is one of the very few gaming communities where a large number of people meet in person across the globe in events called Bar Citizen. People, especially popular ORG leaders like Montoya regularly meet other established community members. This changes the environment of the game community to realizing that oh hey.. maybe I should be careful what I say because I might actually meet this other person.. in person someday. Yes that's not going to be the case for everyone... but for the die hard fans... it's a reality. It's an interesting dynamic that IRL activity bleeds over into the game community and vis versa. IMO it's very special.

Risks:

-Your gift gets used up and game isn't released

-You don't get your pledge incentives

Let me add to this, if either of these were to happen, you can seek legal action for a remedy. You'd need to speak to an attorney to evaluate your situation for the best course of action. But keep in mind.. lets say you change your mind about your pledges... other than going back on your promise... you can usually still get a refund with some minor legal proceedings such as formal communication demanding a refund. But I would advise those thinking they might do this.. to not pledge.. or just only pledge for a base game package and nothing else.

There are too many "whales" and community members actively supporting CIG for every concept ship sale and regular sales that, unless they make some really dumb operating decisions/mistakes or some kind of legal interference.. the game's development won't cease. Too many of ... us? .. want the game to be the best it can be.

That being shared,

If you guys/gals have any questions, how to's, dos and don'ts, pledge strategy for Star Citizen... that you want to know how I handle/or would do.. I'm here for ya! <3

Btw.. I just want add, if you only get the base game package during sales events like the anniversary sale or holiday sales, you can get a base game package for $35 like this one

And that's it! You'll easily get $35 worth of gameplay value EVEN if the game never releases.

Imo the people claiming this is high risk for the average pledger are just not thinking entirely clearly about this.

The risk is proportionally only higher with the more you pledge where the value you get out of the game NOW, is less than what you pledge for.

If that makes sense?

I wouldn't say the risk is high, if you watch their YouTube series called Around the Verse you will see a rather large amount of what goes on behind the scenes during development, not to mention Bugsmashers where you see them actively fix bugs. You are not just buying an unfinished game, you are buying the experience of watching something you are invested in grow and get bigger and better with an almost personal connection the developers themselves. You can't buy this thing with Activision or EA.

I love the weekly update videos and being part of an active organisation who are enthusiastic about the game to the point you can't help but smile when you hear the game being mentioned.

The risk is low, they have a huge budget and once 3.0 comes out you'll see just how far they have come and show no signs of slowing down.

Plus just get the basic package and there's little risk at all. I've invested $465 so far and am happy to say I trust them with every penny.

IMO no. I would say the same about any other pre-order however, so my opinion is not limited to Star Citizen or any single other game, movie, music album, or TV show. I don't believe in pre-ordering unfinished content because the hassle of refunding, lawyering up, or whatever you need to do should the project fail is not worth my time, let alone money, regardless of the risk involved. (I'm also one who has no desire to gamble via the lottery, and have only ever set foot in a casino once and have no plans to go back because casinos make me immediately depressed. Anywho.)

However, it seems you've answered your own question here: If you're willing to invest whatever the minimum amount is to play the game and enjoy its' current state of unfinishedness, then have at her, enjoy it, and go for it! All that matters is that YOU believe you got your money's worth of enjoyment.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

There's a way to either get Squadron 42 or Star Citizen PU for only $15.

Technically you'll pay a bit more but the difference will go to your RSI credit.

Here's how it works...

There's packages that come with only Star Citizen or only Squadron 42.

And when you go to purchases the RSI website asks if you want to addon Squadron 42 or Star Citizen to your package for $15.

If you click yes, purchase, and 24 hours later.. melt your package but not the addon...

you then successfully have either game for only $15! plus the left over to play with if you want to buy UEC when the game is released.

Remember it's the addon you keep, which you will only get the option to addon if your base package doesn't include it.

Both game addons can be also had individually this way by doing the opposite game packages.. however you end up paying more to do this but the entire difference will always go into your RSI credit.

Hope this helps someone.. useful for people who want the game to play now but don't want to commit to pledging for any particular ship yet.
