Best gpu for 1080p

Quick question on what is the best graphics card to get rn for 1080p gaming meaning running everything on ultra always above 60 no stuttering.

RX580 or GTX 1060 6GB.

Actually you can count the 1070 as well

I got a 1070 today. Crushes everything at 1080p and can handle older titles at 4k.

 

Its interesting, GPU pricing in my country doesn't seem to have been affected by coin miners. Although there is only one (overpriced) AMD card available atm.

GTX 1070 if you want to max out everything at 60fps or you plan on moving to a 1440p display. Otherwise a 1060 is fine for 1080p but some newer titles are going to have to be toned down a bit.

GTX 1060 6GB, was made for Max-Ultra settings 1080p, can handle a lot of 1440p too.

 

Otherwise, RX 480/580, GTX 980 and R9 290X, possibly also 780 Ti.

GTX 1060 / RX 580? Forget it. You will NOT (!!!!) be Able to run every game "max ultra" at perfect 60 fps lock. No chance.

 

For the following: I had a GTX 1060 and a 1080p / 60 Hz screen. Since a few Months, i have a GTX 1080, and a 1440p / 144 Hz G-Sync monitor. But that one is defective, so i send it to repair blabla, so i have enough time to play with a GTX 1080 in 1080p, and provide some data.

 

- Rise of the Tomb Raider for example, you need to put maybe 1-2 settings down to the 2nd highest, to get that 60 lock (otherwise 55-58~ drops).

Anti Aliasing needs to be at FXAA or SMAA. If you dare to use SSAA x2 or even x4, your fps will prettyy much go down to 30~.

I have a GTX 1080, and if i put literaly EVERYTHING to the "max" possible, i get around 50 fps~, with easy drops to 45~. So if you mean the term "Max Ultra" Literaly, then you NEED a 1080 ti / Titan X. Because GTX 1080 is NOT able to keep 60 fps here^^ A GTX 1060 would not even be able to keep 30 fps here.

But if you are smart, and turn SSAA x4 down to SMAA, voila.. Magic! My fps go from 45 up to 90. Still not enough for 60+ on a GTX 1060. Tweak a bit here and there.. Shadows from Very High to High. Sunshadows too. Ambient Occlusion from VXAO to HBAO+, and you can get another 10-25 fps.

It almost looks the same, you probably won't notice a Difference visually. Except, that it runs MUCH smoother.

 

- Witcher 3: Hairworks OFF, and Object Distance~ to 2nd highest, or this 1 Setting on Ultra will let your fps drop down to 50 depending on what you see on the screen with a GTX 1060.

I had this one setting down to 2nd highest, Hairworks off (since that makes your fps drop hard when zooming to Geralt's Hair), and voila, clean 60 fps lock.

 

- Ghost Recon Wildlands: I cranked up Every single setting to the Max. My GTX 1080 sits around 50 fps, and drops as low as 44~ for a short moment. All just looking around at the Save i just have (beginning at the game, somewhere with alooot of gras/trees).

Imagine some action is going on, weapons, explosions etc. That might drop below 40. With a GTX 1080. In 1080p Resolution.

A GTX 1060 would sit at <30 fps here.

 

- Assassin's Creed Syndicate (or Unity) are currently updating / Downloading, then i can give you that too if you like. But i promise you: If you use "max Ultra" like literaly every setting to the Max possible, a GTX 1060 / RX 580 will NOT be able to keep 60 fps here.

 

 

You get, what i'm trying to show you? Games are NOT designed / made / optimized for Ultra settings. They are made/optimized for HIGH settings in Mind.

Ultra setting might give you 1% better visuals, and sometimes half your fps. In most cases, you can take Screenshots in High vs. Ultra, and zoom into the Screenshots to look for differences. Is that worth? No.

 

------> LEARN how to use Graphic sliders. That's what they are made for. Tweak them just alittle, find your own sweetspot between graphic quality and fps. And you can get away with a <300~ bucks GTX 1060, for a clean 60 fps lock in 1080p, with "almost" maxed out. Maybe not ultra, but just "high". But clean 60 fps.

 

If you are NOT able to do that, then you will have to spend 800+ Bucks for a GTX 1080 ti.

 

Because i can tell from my own experience: Even a GTX 1080 is NOT fast enough, for a perfect 60 fps lock in every game, with 100% maxed out Settings. 

 

 

Remember: You can bring every single GPU down to it's knees. In some cases, you don't even need anything fancy like DSR. Just pull everything to the right, and done.

@Darkseth thanks forward your info but I was thinking about getting a 1080ti and it would just end up bottleknecking cause of my CPU so I was thinking of just getting a 1080 or a 1070 cuz I might wanna get a vr headset pretty soon

Well, i didn't try to get you to throw 800€ away when it's mostly not even needed.

 

I wanted to show you, to not blindly want "max ultra".

 

You can get away with a 300€ gpu instead 800€ gpu, same fps, same resolution.

Just a few setting tweaked, but still mostly High - Ultra. You trade 500€ for like 1% image quality^^

 

So yea.. GTX 1070 is reasonable, GTX 1080 might also be fine, if the additional cost isn't too high (Anything like <25% More price from a GTX 1070 is perfectly fine and you can take it.

25% more Price, 25% more performance = same Price/performance.

 

And you can always use DSR for a sharper image. ^^

 

I personally would just get a GTX 1060, live with MINOR compromises, and just be happy, and enjoy smooth 60 fps~.

And just upgrade in 2 years~ if you need performance. Since that's not too long, a GTX 1060 will still be something worth.

like others have mentioned, either the gtx 1060 or rx 580. they can max out any game at 1080p.
