Hello,

The time has come, that I have to upgrade my CPU. I'll be going from an fx-6300 to a Ryzen 5 1600, which includes a mobo and ram swap.

My question is, would I still be able to use the same copy of windows already installed on the same HDD?

When I got this PC I couldn't get the old drive to boot up windows on the new PC, while it worked fine on the old one.

you can, but it needs to be a retail copy (not OEM) and linked to your Microsoft account.

if it is, it's simple to declare that you changed hardware on the system, and your license will transfer

if it's an OEM key, you need to call MS, and maybe they will switch over your license.

if you don't have a MS account, then make one and link your account to it.

Hey, thank you for the answer.

Probably a stupid question, but how would I know which I have?

Not a stupid question at all. I had to look it up

Depends where you got the PC from:

if you purchased windows yourself, you have a retail key

if you got your PC from an OEM, you have an OEM key

if you're not sure, you can paste this "slmgr.vbs /dlv" into a run windows (Win Key + R) and it will tell you which channel you're in. (OEM/Retail)

Alright, thank you. I'll peep this out whenever I get back home. I'll report back on this post if I have further questions.

strange.

you should still be able to transfer the key, but you will need to call Microsoft, and AFAIK it's simply a waste of a decent chunk of time.

so i cant use it when i swap out my mobo?

you can, you just need to call Microsoft after the switch to transfer the license AFAIK

this might be worth a quick skim:

https://www.mydigitallife.net/differences-between-oem-channel-slp-nonslp-and-coa-license-product-keys/

"OEM:NONSLP (Non System Locked Pre-installation): Similar to retail product key, but distributed and supported by an OEM. Non-SLP product key is also not brand specific. End-users are required to perform activation by phone or activate online."

since it's not system locked pre-installation, then it might work with no issues. try that first. if there are issues, then a call to MS support will fix them.

Doesn't change it. Like the thing @RadiatingLight quotes says, stores do sell both. OEM versions are sold with new systems, usually when you buy drive, mobo, CPU and RAM together. But some, like the one I used, aren't too serious about it. I'm running Win7 OEM on 3rd mobo after purchase.
