Will it work?

So, i decided to finally build a game server for me and my friends. I started looking into old server cpus, eventually i found a great deal for a e3-1230 for around 60 bucks (not v2,v3 or anything like that, just e3-1230)

and then i went and searched for motherboards that is compatible with that cpu, but i am still not sure which will work or not.

I've found one that might work: Asrock Z68 Pro-3 M Intel Z68 mATX

also heard that z87 works too.

i am still not sure. can you guys give me some advice on what works or not?

Just look for which socket the CPU fits in. It's LGA 1155 for this one if Intel Ark is correct. The mainboard should fit, yes.

They're both the same socket.

Thank you for such a quick reply, but i have a question, The motherboard listed above (Asrock Z68 Pro-3 M Intel Z68 mATX) does not have e3-1230 listed in the supported cpu list, it only listed e3-1230 v2, so i want to confirm that it wokrs, it would work, right?

SHOULD work. The bios might need to be flashed.

 

Im hosting game servers on a q8300. Might be cheaper to find an old OEM machine and throw one of those in it.

Q8300? not really for me, planning to host heavily modded game servers that struggles to run on i3. So yea, Q8300 not for me. also is 32GBs of ddr3 1333 reg ecc micron ram worth 100bucks? They are second hand and should work right?

You dont have a motherboard that supports that type of ram ¨ecc or Error-correcting code memory¨ wil only work on Xeon E5 family and AM4 motherboards. If you want a motherbord fot that type of ram look for Cxx chip set or X99  Its ddr3 not 4

Thank you for your help, i was just thinking or a cheap 300 bucks scrapyard build but for servers
