Building a system just for fun - recommendations?

My main system is an x299, but I want to build a 2nd system just for fun, and to learn more about varied motherboards and setups from now and in recent history too. 

 

What would you do? Build an older x79, or I'm curious to tinker with ryzen, or perhaps z270 and use it to practice overclocking?

How much you'd like to spend? Since you have an x299 system why not build a 7700k system cause it is better for gaming and have one system purely for workload and one for gaming only.

I'd say to get an old Core 2 Extreme and practise overclocking, might as well show users of locked i5s who's boss

I might reccomend trying out a Ryzen (3 or 5) system if you want an all-purpose PC.

Computer engineering grad student, cybersecurity researcher, and hobbyist embedded systems developer
