USB cable splitting for Hotspot tethering?

An older post I know but Jerochy is actual right with what he says.  It is now 2019.  I have a surface pro 6 and when I USB tether from my phone, the phone won't charge simultaneously.   After a while the phone battery is low.   What Jerochy is asking is for a USB splitter cable that will 1) allow him to usb tether his phone using one split of the cable while 2) charging the phone by plugging in the power source in the second split of the cable.  Well, there is such a thing.  It is called a USB 3.1 Type 3 to Dual A Male Extra Power Data Y Cable for Cell Phone & Hard Disk.  The male USB plugs into the cellphone.  One female usb (submitting power + data) is used to charge the phone, the other (data only) is connected to the laptop and allows you to tether the phone.  This cable is available online (amazon.com).

 

Hope this helps someone with the same issue (it still exists today, 2 years later .... I had that problem just a week ago).

Hey guys,

I'm in a very unique situation where I'll be relying on a hot spot for a good amount of time. It is a 100% unlimited hotspot with no throttling and I can about 38mbps down in my house. I've noticed that I can get almost as much as 2 times faster download speeds running speed tests on my phone instead of my computer as my phone has 5g and my comp is connected with 2.4. I did try USB tethering it and I did get the same speeds I was getting on my phone. USB tethering it would mean that I would always need my PC on in order for the hotspot to work which I don't usually do. 

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to see if I can get a 1 male/2female USB splitter so I could try charging and tethering at the same time. Something tells me it "could" work but might get a little hairy. I should just invest a couple bucks in getting a wireless card with 5g.

Just thought I'd post on here and saw what you guys thought. If you're curious, the Hotspot is a AT&T united explore 815s.

You can use a USB cable splitter to charge multiple devices at once. However, USB will be unable to transmit data to both devices to the host at the same time.

 

I'm confused as to what you're trying to accomplish, exactly.

 

When you say you want to charge and tether at the same time, what exactly are you talking about?

 

What are you charging? The mobile hotspot? A cellphone? Your laptop?

 

What are you charging off of? A wall outlet? A USB Battery Pack? Your laptop?

 

If you use USB Tether to connect the hotspot to your laptop, I don't see why the laptop wouldn't also charge the hotspot at the same time.

You get faster internet on a hotspot than anyone I know on CenturyLink's 40Mbps plan or better. Damn, that's a good network.

USB ports might not actually be able to charge the hotspot, but that shouldn't be an issue on any recent device if it has USB 3.0 and/or power share.

Yeah it's a little convoluted but I'm trying to charge the hotspot via the micro usb port and tether to my PC using the same micro USB port as it only has one.

Your laptop is unable to charge the hotspot over USB?

If your laptop does not provide enough power to charge the hotspot simultaneously while tethered over USB, then get an externally powered USB hub and connect the hotspot to that.

I've realized that it actually won't charge while plugged into a pc. It switches to USB tethering and does not charge. I appreciate the help though.

According to the documentation of the device you're talking about :

Use USB tethering to connect to the Internet from supported computers with a USB cable and charge the mobile hotspot battery at the same time. 

So when you're using USB tethering, the device should not run out of battery. If it is, like it was mentioned before, either your laptop is not providing enough juice, or your unit is faulty.

An older post I know but Jerochy is actual right with what he says.  It is now 2019.  I have a surface pro 6 and when I USB tether from my phone, the phone won't charge simultaneously.   After a while the phone battery is low.   What Jerochy is asking is for a USB splitter cable that will 1) allow him to usb tether his phone using one split of the cable while 2) charging the phone by plugging in the power source in the second split of the cable.  Well, there is such a thing.  It is called a USB 3.1 Type 3 to Dual A Male Extra Power Data Y Cable for Cell Phone & Hard Disk.  The male USB plugs into the cellphone.  One female usb (submitting power + data) is used to charge the phone, the other (data only) is connected to the laptop and allows you to tether the phone.  This cable is available online (amazon.com).

 

Hope this helps someone with the same issue (it still exists today, 2 years later .... I had that problem just a week ago).
