Core i7 7700K Idle Temps

Hi all,

 

I finally got my build together (with the exception of my graphics card. I installed my components literally today:

 

Core I7 7700K

Corsair Liquid Cooler 100v2

MSI B250 Motherboard

Corsair 16 gigs 2400 DDR4 ram

 

 

So my concern is the current idle temperature. I haven't installed Windows yet, I went to the MSI motherboard menu to poke around a bit and I saw that my Idle temp was at 40 C, then jumped to 44 C, then down to 38 C, now its hovering at a solid 37 C. The motherboard is at a solid 30 C. My concern is that I feel like that's a little high. My i5 4430  in my other desktop is running idle at 30 C. Now I know that Kaby Lake runs a bit warm, so I wanted to make sure that this is okay where it's at. I am not overclocking anything nor do I have any boost settings on.

Also side note, I am not using the thermal paste that came with the cooler, I'm using Arctic Silver 5.

I'd say it'll drop down once you're inside windows and the OS can lower the frequency/voltage at idle.

That is odd. My 7700K with my Noctua NH-U12S Cooler in push/pull has an idle at 30 C, but then again my room is around 65-70 F. Install Windows and go from there.

I never delidded a CPU before. I've seen people do it a bunch of times, but I know I'd muck it up!

I'll install Windows now! My room is around 75 degrees F though. It's just weird that my 4430 is at 30 C and an i7 with a somewhat beefy cooler is at 37-38 C Idle.

Your bios is going to show your temps at full frequency (not load) and full voltage, thus your temps will be higher.  Actually, that's probably what your temps SHOULD be, however, Windows will lower your CPU frequency and voltage when your PC is idle to conserve power and lower temps.

Once you install Windows and install drivers and ultities your temps will go down. I use a MSI C236a board (I used to have a Skylake Xeon in my PC). The fans on my CPU cooler will ramp up until the PC is booting into Windows. It may just be on how your MOBO handles temps too.

That all makes sense! I never knew that before (learn something new everyday!) I use Speccy to monitor my CPU and GPU temps, is that generally accurate or is there a better software temperature monitor out there?

It depends on what you like to use. I used to use NZXT Cam until I had some issues with it. Now I use Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility and MSI Command Center for the CPU. For my 1070 Strix I use EVGA XOC and sometimes Asus GPU Tweak 2 (It is sucky software, I mainly use It for the RGB lighting)

Speccy seems accurate from the times I've used it.  HWMonitor goes into much more detail.  For every day usage, I use Core Temp as I can minimize it to the system tray as an icon that shows the core temperatures (or just one icon showing the highest core temperature).

You all were right! The CPU idle temp is hovering between 26-28 C! You guys rock! This thread saved me a mini heart attack and a lot of research! Thank you to everybody who gave me advice!
