Hey, trying to build a budget gaming pc for 1000 dollars. Needs at least a gtx 1060 or equivalent, overclockable core i5 or core i7, and 8-16gb ram. Thanks.

Yeah that wouldn't be a budget gaming pc lol. Also I would wait for gpu prices to normalize before doing a new build as right now the prices are still way out of wack because of the etherium mining craze

I would go used on the GPU, as the current minding craze has destroyed the market for new cards. I would look for the best possible deal on a 980 or 980ti. Than I would pair that with the best Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU your left over budget allows.

Agreed, Ryzen AM4 is a powerful chip set that should not be overlooked when biulding a price to performance PC in the 1000$ price range.

Why you both pick bad SSDs

You can't really buy a good budget gaming pc nowadays with the gpu shortage but if you are willing to wait a bit, it looks like ethereium miners are selling their gpus (saw an article but can't link to it as I can't remember where I saw it).

If you want to buy one now, this is a list that I made on pcpartpicker. I'll go through everything and explain why I chose it:

 

CPU: ryzen 1400- relatively cheap, performs well, comes with a cooler potent enough for a slight overclock and you don't need that much cpu power in games 

Motherboard: Good for overclocking, simple BIOS, cheap, good user ratings.

Memory: 16 gb might be a bit much for games but I think it's worth since you said that you want a 1060 at least so I imagine you will be playing games that are quite demanding so they will take some space in memory but you can also go for 8 GB to save a bit more money for a better gpu. 

Storage: another area where you could shave some bucks by going with 120 gb but nonetheless, an SSD I think is crucial nowadays. Also, 1TB HDD should fit you well.

Case: relatively cheap but you can go for cheaper options if you don't really care for the looks of it and care more about pc performance ( DeepCool and Thermaltake have cheap and reliable case options ). Also, looks really nice in my opinion but, unfortunately, no side panel.

GPU: With this list you have 300$ to spend for a gpu and if you shave some cash by going with the suggestions listed above, you can save even more. For a bit over 300$ I think you can find a 980 or a 980ti which are great options. If you want to go for AMD I don't think you can find a good deal with the mining thing still going on but nevertheless, 300$ for a used gpu should be enough.

Why that drive specifically? There are a lot that are $10-15 cheaper.
