When to Update BIOS

Don't update BIOS unless you have a very good excuse to do so, like a hardware compatibility issue or something.

 

I don't like the idea of touching low-level software willy nilly.

Flashing a MOBO BIOS is very hard to screw up

I mean, I've DONE it but I was doing something reckless at the time. Even then, just pulled the EEPROM chip out, stuck it into breadboard, hooked that up to a BusPirate and flashed it back to a stock bios that way.

You can do it whenever you want, but for the most part if your BIOS is working well then don't update it.  Because the update can bring up new issues, if you bought a new SSD or CPU that required a BIOS update then that's fine.  Or there was a BIOS bug causing you some problems that's a good reason too.  The thing you need to keep in mind, is it's not wise to just update something because what you've got is older.  You should only update with reason, a good thing to do is to check the BIOS updates and read the version notes.  If you see a bug fixed or something that you are experiencing, go for it. 

 

Being able to stop, and analyse why you should do something is a very valuable skill and it applies anywhere.  So the real question is not when, it's why?  Why do you want to update the BIOS?

Yeah, it's SO HARD to have a power cut mid BIOS flash, it's SO INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to accidentally flash the wrong bios, it's even MORE DIFFICULT to flash a bios that contains serious bugs and glitches.

I see almost no benefit in updating BIOS. If your system was working fine before, what benefit do you get? The way I see it, there's almost no advantage to updating just because there's a new version but there's always a disadvantage that you can brick the motherboard if something goes wrong during the update process or if the update causes issues, it's a PITA to roll back (unless BIOS update tools let you go back to a previous version without question)

Yeah, it's SO HARD to have a power cut mid BIOS flash, it's SO INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to accidentally flash the wrong bios, it's even MORE DIFFICULT to flash a bios that contains serious bugs and glitches.  

Besides the power cutting out, which can be easily solved with a UPS all the other problem are most likely your fault. Just go the MOBO brand site directly. You don't need to go to cnet to download it

Update?   No no, you miss understand. There's no BIOS update to give my X79 board NVME support. I'm ripping the module out of an X99 BIOS and patching it into an X79 BIOS myself.

Would you recommend it to anyone doing their first build and who needs to ask this question? I wouldn't. The fact being that update process varies between mobos so much. Like I didn't understand how someone could mess it on MSI when I had updated it without issues on Asus, Asrock, Abit and Gigabyte boards, two first with floppies and last by using both windows util and Q-Flash. Then I updated on MSI and saw reason why it had gone wrong. One extra boot sequence where user had thought install was finished screwed it.

Just don't update it during a storm or whenever there are rolling blackouts.  If your board has a dual BIOS, then there's not really any risk.
