Hello internet people!!! First post here on ltt.

Soo currently I'm using a AMD FX-8350 and a GTX 660 on a Asus  M5A88-V EVO and I'm  thinking the graphics card is considerably less powerful than the cpu. I'm considering a GTX 1070 to replace my old gpu and I'm afraid it will be too powerful for my current cpu. Also my setup is running of a 500W power supply, will the 1070 run with no issues?

Sorry for bad english.

Thanks

The 1070 should be fine on a 500W psu, so long as the psu is of sufficient quality.

However, yes, in games with poor multithreded optimization you will see a bottleneck to performance on the gpu. Most games though should run decently well, certainly better than they are running now. I'd upgrade, then start saving to upgrade the cpu in due time as your next upgrade.

500W is enough for a 1070, but there will be a CPU bottleneck, especially if you're not OC'ed.

maybe go for something a bit less powerful? once the mining craze dies down, you should be able to get an RX 580 8GB for cheap, and it crushes 1080p gaming.

I'd stick with your current GPU or a 1060 6GB/970 if you want to upgrade.

I'll say what I always say, the "B" word imo should only ever be used according to a point of reference. What is your target resolution and framerate post-upgrade?1080p 60/75/144hz? 1440p 60hz+?

1080p 60hz nothing too fancy but I didn't wanted to run newer games on low you know.

So, depending on the title, you should be alright. I know plenty of AAA titles that won't climb much past 30-40% usage on my (admittedly old) Sandy Bridge 2600k. I won't vouch for every single title, but broadly speaking you should be ok. If in doubt of course, you could always overclock your 8350 a bit. So, if you really want to stretch your budget for a decent GPU upgrade (which is usually where the bulk of spending power goes), instead of a whole platform upgrade, you could. You will run into your CPU ceiling quick if you're running uncapped, but it doesn't really matter if you're at 60hz, since you can leverage the extra horsepower for stuff like MSAA or more eyecandy. There's still stuff that'll work a 1070 hard, even on 1080p, like The Witcher 3, or even GTAV f.ex.

I tough of that. But since I don't understand much about graphic cards I thought there is not that big of a difference between 660 and 1060. Is it worth the upgrade ?

Specially since where I live these things are very expensive. I just want to be sure that I buy something worth it.

How expensive is the 970 used?

A 660 and a 1060 is still a pretty massive difference, but he meant that it would be a better match in proportion to your CPU and eliminates possible issues with being able to use the extra power. It depends on where you want to use your budget. Do you have enough for a good platform (CPU/MB) upgrade? Are you willing to stick with a sub-par GPU while upgrading the rest? Or do you want to spend more on a faster GPU that will last you a while longer, and maybe also be used in your next build if you upgrade the rest?

I've just build myself a new computer and I'm pretty new at this (ryzen 1500x and MSI gaming X 580), but for what i know, 1060 and 580 can do pretty well at 1080p gaming, espacely if your not going above 60hz. AAA title can be run pretty good on those GPU. There is a lot of comparaison on youtube that you can watch, there is one that compare 580 vs 1060. If your not sure about your CPU bottlenecking yout GPU, I'll would not go for a 1070, I'll stick with a 580 or 1060. If your monitor is G-sync or Free syck should help you to decide on witch side you go.

FX-8 with a 1070 @ 1080 will pose a bottleneck in some situations, just wack on vsync and have a solid 60fps experience in most games.

If you haven't oc that thing to it's boost clock on all cores and turn off ,application power management, turbo boost and (i'll check my bios there's another one I forget). Half the problems I always found with games and the fx chips is the aggressive power saving 'features', the constant jump in clock and lowering of the clock to save power just leaves the gpu hanging.

I've a similar setup with an R9 Fury (think between a 580 and a 1070 for performance) and in there's a slight bottleneck for some games but that's also at 1440p.

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige
