Network Issue

andrew.f

Hi,

I have a TP-Link EAP225 access point that is working fine [to my current knowledge] when I connect it to my isp fibre modem through a short ethernet cable. I get consistent speeds up and down over wifi from the AP.

My problem is when I connect the AP to the modem through ethernet cables in the house [longer cat5E cables]. I get much slower speeds over wifi [80Mbs drop] but when i connect my laptop to the same cable i get the full speeds. Up untill today the upload was way faster than the download but i was messing around in the AP settings and now they're both slow.

I have tried 2 different ethernet cables in the house and get the same result each time.

In the AP's settings i have tried changing the channels and disabling QoS, none of which have made any improvement.

I'm sorry if my description isn't that clear.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks for the response.

I've tried it like 4 or 5 times with no improvement.

Sorry should have mentioned it.

Just there i changed the channel to 1 and it has improved to 50 down and 95 up, which is better but still not even close to the 500/100 its at from the modem. I'm meant to be getting 1000/1000 but my isp has said that there's an issue at the moment, i though that may be the case at the beginning but i know for sure it's not now.

How far away are you from the AP when testing wireless speeds? Keep in mind that wireless will almost never deliver the same speed as wired and there are a lot of factors that impact speed.

On the laptop, right click on the wireless icon in the lower right hand corner, open up network and sharing center > change adapter settings > Right click on the wireless connection, click properties, post a screenshot. I'm curious if it's on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band

Ah! 2.4GHz is much slower but gives better distance compared to 5GHz.

What model laptop do you have?

Toshiba C50-A but i'm nearly 100% sure the laptop or if im using 2.4GHz or 5GHz is'nt the problem. On another laptop connected using 5GHz the speed is the same.

Hmmm, alright.

It's possible one of the long cables is damaged. Is it run through the walls or is it just run through the dwelling?

On a Windows PC, you should connect to the wireless network, then go to control panel & search for "Network and Sharing Centre", then on the left click "change adapter settings".

Once there, find your wireless adapter.  Next, right click and select status and observe the "Speed".  This is the bandwidth available from the laptop to your WAP.  You can use that to check that the bottleneck isn't there.

Also, does your ISP router have wireless capabilities?  You could check the channels currently in use to make sure your APs are not co-channelling.
