Win 7 Sys. Image used for Win 8.1

Files are easy part. Just backup all folders containing something you want to save. Including most configuration files from AppData and such. Most software have function to export user settings. With software, games using Steam or Origin are easy. Rest would be reinstalls even if you would just reinstall Windows on another drive.

Can I make a system image in Windows 7 and then use that image in Window 8.1?

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

What do you mean by "use the image in Windows 8.1"?

I am moving my mother from my home pc Win 7 to her "new" Win 8 laptop.

Just backup as much as you can. But Win7 and Win8.1 are so different from eachother that most of system settings wouldn't be same anyway. Plus all little differences between systems hardwarewise too.

Well at least I don't have things like games that I would lose all my saves. Most everything is file related which can be moved fairly easy. I just have to decide to call Microsoft and deal with them to get a new key due to having to replace my motherboard (again) or just use my Win 8.1 key. I can still buy Win 8.1 keys fairly inexpensive while with Win 7 it's sketchy.
