So i am on a plan with my mother and step dad with at&t where it is unlimited talk, text and data. Currently my internet is down and was wondering if i turned on wifi hotspot and got on my computer with that if it would charge us more.

Don't think so. Unless AT&T is a dick and charges extra.

How much extra did you have to pay and for how long did you use the hotspot

This is a fact, back when they were all unlimited they would call and warn you that "tethering is not allowed with your current package, we would be happy to transfer you to a capped plan that supports tethering."  In fact they automatically migrated my account to a different plan after I was tethering for a while.

They can detect it on their network somehow.  I assume its the way the packets are handled or that it comes from a different IP.

And Hari is completely correct, AT&T are a bunch of jerks.  They are only in it for the money.

 

On a personal note, my plan now allows tethering at anytime up to the amount of "high speed" data we pay for.  My experience with tethering with unlimited led to significant speed throttling after 2 or 3GB of usage.  Hope this helps.

You'll probably be charged extra, but using a VPN will make it seem like you aren't using hotspot. Download Opera VPN on your phone (don't know if it's the same for iOS)

You need to check your plan very carefully. Most of the time Tethering and hotspot costs extra or is part of a higher tier plan. Some of the time also, you get limited amount of 4G and then they throttle to lower speeds.

AT&T is some of the biggest dicks. They would try to screw over a customer for a few extra dollars. Them and Verizon, if it weren't for T Mobile Unlimited data wouldn't exist.
