TN or IPS?

Greetings, 

I'm planning to purchase a new monitor, which will be used mostly for gaming purposes. The options are a 1080p, 144HZ TN panel monitor and a 1440p, 60HZ IPS panel monitor. I'm not going to lie, I'm a sucker for a clear, vibrant and vivid image. However, I'm not quite sure if by selecting the better image/color-wise monitor  I'm going to sacrifice some of my gaming experience. Which one would you pick? (BTW, the price range of both monitors coincides)

Especially at 1440p, it'll look so much nicer than a TN 1080p panel. (trust me, i regret getting 2 1080p TN panels lol)

There is a noticeable difference in the refresh rates of both. How exactly would high refresh rates affect my gaming experience?

On the objective side;

  • Less input lag. The time of your input to the time it gets displayed is cut by at least half
  • More information your mind can use because you're receiving more frames per second
  • Smoother motion

However, the experience itself is still relative and if you suck at the game, having a high refresh rate monitor won't change that. I have a 144Hz monitor, I still suck at competitive FPS games. Is 144Hz a deal breaker to me so much that I will never go back to 60Hz? Not really. I mean, I kind of have to live with it at work.

Not in the real World.

Mine are TN panels and they don't have too bad colour accuracy, be interesting to see them in those tests.

the 1080p 144hz panel may be worth it if you play competitively, or play games that you know you can reach high fps. 

 

but once you go IPS, you can't go back. if you care about how games look, IPS will add to the experience. even the most bland-looking games will look better on IPS. and not just games, media consumption as well. however there are some TN panels that actually aren't that bad. Dell S2716DG for ex.

I use http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/? for quick and dirty calibration. However if you really want to be sure and have some hard numbers to work with, there's a tool out there that latches on to the monitor and you run a software test suite against it.

I'm just saying saying all TNs are inferior to an IPS for color accuracy reasons is demonstrably false.

This. Does 144hz feel amazing? Yes. Yes it does. But 60 fps doesn't subtract from the enjoyability of games, with the notable exception of those that require perfect twitch accuracy and speed (CS:GO, etc). If you're playing anything but those, get the 1440p IPS. It's not even a close comparison.

Apart from fps games, will I perceive an apparent difference on my performance in other genres, such as moba games, tps or strategy games?

Well, I do play some competitive multiplayer games (rainbow six, rust, league of legends), but I also own a big library of single player game titles. Would you rather sacrifice image for performance, or vice versa?

Probably not. MOBAs maybe, but things are slower paced anyway by design.

I do play some tactical shooters and MOBAs, but I also play a lot of single player games.
