Hi, so I am looking for a new cpu to boost my grandpa's old pre-built HP PC. He has an Asus benicia mobo with core 2 due e4500 cpu and 2gb of ram (that also wants a upgrade). What would be the best cpu for internet browsing and light games (like Tetris)? Or is it even worth upgrading?

Honestly, it really depends.  From the issues I've dealt with, some LGA 775 motherboards don't allow quad cores, which would be the best CPUs on the socket.  iirc, the best CPUs on the 775 socket are the Core 2 Extreme QX9770, but then you have Core 2 Quads like the Q9650 and the Q9550S.

But that's the best on the 775 socket from Intel.

Of course there's always the 771 mod that allows you to use Xeons on the 775 socket, but there's several risks with that, including accidentally bricking the motherboard.

Honestly, make sure that his motherboard can handle quad cores, then work from there.

what?

Why make it so complex? You think his grandma will know the difference? A 775 quad core if their motherboard supports it is good enough. Better yet a SSD will be the better upgrade path, then a cpu upgrade.

No you didn't. Instead of providing a cpu that's already compatible with his grandma's current setup. You have to make it complicated, by providing a not compatible cpu. Where it requires hardware modification to their motherboard, and additional cost for the materials, and tools in order to complete the mod.

It's actually quite simple though (and a little cheaper than a q9650 or similar).

you really just need a sticker and an art/hobby knife that can be found at any hardware store

Fine then, if OP goes your route and he broke his grandma's computer. You will have to pay for a new one.

Ahhh, I think I will go for the easier option :) core 2 quads or duos will be enough, I don't necessarily need the most powerful CPU ever made for this socket

Why not?

You're the one here suggesting this complex setup, when the OP just want to do is a simple cpu upgrade.

Intel socket 775 motherboard that support quad core starts with a Intel P35 chipset. Anything below that, will not support a socket 775 quad core. Checking the processor, in your grandma's computer, and what she does. The current processor should still be good enough for her needs. Tetris isn't a heavy game. My parent's machine is also running on a socket 775 dual core at 2.2GHz. And for their needs and light games, it works just fine.

The CPU isn't worth upgrading, get more ram and probably get a SSD. The SSD will bring new life into her system.

I'd recommend a core 2 quad , like a q6600 or q9450 , as they're cheap .Modded  Lga 771 xeons are also a nice idea , but it all depends on if you're willing to do it .

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

That Asus motherboard looks kinda weak on the VRM side, I personally would be reluctant to combine it with very power hungry processors. Also, the cooler you have may also be on the cheaper side, "optimized" for lower power processors.

The E4500 processor you currently have is one with a 65w TDP and according to the specifications on the HP's site: https://support.hp.com/lv-en/document/c01324212 you shouldn't install processors newer than Intel Q6600 or any intel Q9xxx but these are processors with 105w TDP ... so I don't know, seems kinda power hungry processors and yeah, basically you may have to upgrade the cooler as well if you jump from a 45w 65w tdp to a 105w tdp cpu.

Still you can find an Intel q6600 on eBay for around 10-15$ so it would be a nice and cheap upgrade attempt.

Still if you'd want to be a good kid...

Depending on your budget and where you are, you could skip "upgrading" and you could just go for one of those motherboards with soldered processor - basically you just add a stick of memory and you're done.

For example, this 55$ motherboard+cpu combo has very reasonable performance processor and it's passively cooled and the integrated graphics card has hardware video decoders making it super fast and capable of playing any movie... and it uses maybe 20-30w on average : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157616

So basically no worry about broken coolers, no worry about noise, integrated graphics are fast, just plug a 4-8 GB DDR3 stick in it the sata drive and you're done.

To be fair, the OP did say BEST when what they probably should've said was "the LGA-775 CPU that makes the most sense to put in my grandparent's PC for internet browsing and light games (like Tetris)."

Seems to me that something like a Q6600 or one of the later dual-core chips would be a far more practical and totally adequate solution even if they aren't literally the best thing ever released for the platform.

Well not the first Q6600, the 2nd Q6600, can't remember the stepping. And there are other quad cores too like the Q8000 series which is the cheapest socket 775 that has the faster 1333FSB.

the kid cant find an upgrade to his cpu which is simple enough to find with some hardware and internet knowledge (ark.intel).

(not flaming the OP just saying he's inexperienced)

if he cant do that much research (which is fine) easily do you think he wants to take a knife to his motherboard. cmonBRUH.

Yeah bro if you want more horsepower just custom machine a japanese engine and replace your stock engine...

but i just wanted a cold air intake....

You have to understand, you are toalking to an American Millennial. They dont understand the concept of personal responsibility, it is always someone elses fault.
