Okay one question I have about sli is, how do the cards get into sli. Do they have to be exact same cards? Or say can it be a msi gtx 980 ti and work sli with an evga 980 ti hybrid?

CPU - i7-4790k

GPU - MSI 980 Ti 

Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Memory - 32 GB DDR3

Storage - 3.4 TB

As long as it is the same GPU you can SLI or Crossfire them, so yeah you can use those two cards.

An example would be that you can use a RX 480 and RX 580 since they're the same GPUs

It needs the same videochip, doesn't have to be the same cooler/brand and it needs to have the same amount of VRAM IIRC (so yes, you can mix the EVGA and MSI 980 Ti, because they are both 980 Ti's with 6GB VRAM).

SLI = same VRAM capacity and GPU model (so 980ti goes with 980ti, 1080 goes with 1080)

 

It's better to put the 980ti hybrid in the top slot since it uses an AIO for primary cooling and doesn't get affected much by another card in front of it, The same can't be said with the MSI Gaming card.
