i want to know how i would go about setting up a dual router system where one router acts as any other router does and the other has a vpn. i want to be able to switch back and forth relatively easily depending on what my needs are at the time. also, anything on how to keep my bandwidth up when using a vpn. so how do i physically connect and configure said routers to make this work? i understand that the vpn router must be flashed(DD-WRT, tomato, etc...). but that about as far as i got. i have a netgear r7000p and a netgear r6200v2

You don't need two routers for this nor do you need to flash them with other firmware. Look for a single router that can act as a VPN server with something like OpenVPN. Then you don't get into complexities of setting up two routers and dealing with added hassle and complexities.

ok. the r7000p has these things. now how do i go about setting any of this up? how do i switch back and forth from the vpn and otherwise?

Let me make sure I understand and have read everything correctly.

You want to have a VPN from the router to somewhere else or do you want to VPN back home when away from home?

Also, don't forget to quote people so we get notifications that you've replied :)

ok sorry. im new to this.

so what i want is a vpn for the purposes of using things like kodi or bittorrent. i want this vpn to be on my router so that everything going through the router goes through the vpn. but i also want to be able to do things without the vpn(certain stuff just wont work through a vpn). im not very well versed on the ways of the vpn but the easiest way to achieve my goal to me would be 2 routers. but then we cross the issue of how to put 2 routers on the same network but both of them act as if they were the only one in the network. im not sure if im being clear enough so if thats the case, feel free to be specific

I'm no VPN expert but, usually it's one router for both, you just have to configure the ports on the router and the software you use.

I'm asking the same question as Lurick, do you want to

Connect at home while travelling?

or

Connect to work from your home?

I think he wants to have a VPN from his house that terminates elsewhere.

If the client is Windows (not sure about Linux support) then just use TunnelBear or PrivateInternetAccess client and turn it on and off as needed.

Just build a pfsense box. You can setup openvpn with rules to forward certain traffic through the vpn and other traffic remain routed as normal.
