TEC Project

As the title suggests , i thought of sharing a bit of this project , which is just a demo that TE cooling can be done , but is not worth it in the long run , at least with the Peltier modules as inefficient as current ones are .

 

Here is the modified stock AMD AM2+ socket bracket , which i drilled out to accept bigger and longer screws , so that i can offset the height of the bracket , for the thickness of the Peltier module .

The rubber o-rings are used so that the metal nut doesnt damage the bracket , and same o-rings were used below the bracket , between it and the motherboard .

Here is the TEC-12715 105W peltier element sitting on the CPU . The CPU is an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ on a Biostar MCP6P M2+

You can see the two ( Black / Red ) wires that power the peltier , that go into 4 pin molex connector for +12V .

have you seen coolermasters attempt at this from about 10 years ago? I think it was called the V10 or V12

Its had a normal heatsink, then off to the side with extra heatpipes was second heatsink with TEC that kicked in when needed. I think it had 200C TDP cooling power.

Heard of it , and some other ones aswell , but as with any solution based on TEC principle , its highly in-efficient . Since peltier efficency is somewhere around 5% at best , to achieve those 200W of dissipation it needs huge amounts of power , and with lots of power it means lots of heat => lot of noise . 

 

Im currently getting around 2.C idle temperatures in Win XP ... under some load it is ~ 30.C  but need to properly screenshot and document it first.

Yea its an old PC i was gifted , 6 GB hard drive in it aswell .. but runs XP like a charm and is hosting a TS3 server

thats why it was built into a traditional air cooler. only switched on when it needed that extra cooling.

Yes , but the design of the cooler meant it was really noisy for when it worked without the TEC ... Even more so when the TEC kicked in . 

 

Same with what im doing ... cool as a project , not so much for when you need reliable 24/7 and efficient cooling .

What I would do is combine it with water cooling. It might actually be better to combine water cooling with evaporative cooling.

I have seen people using 2 or more peltiers that are circulating chilled water around a radiator of an AIO . Supposedly works very well .

And the results are .. well if i would want to go sub-zero , a bigger cooler . 

 

I was very sceptical of this thing getting to  -5.C , let alone the  -18.C

This is the result of the test outside the case , and in ideal conditions with multiple fans blowing to cool the thing down , the stock amd heatsink just couldnt cut it . The best i got was 7.C , add the CPUs heat to the equation , i estimate the best temps i got was around  12-15.C with no load.
