What cpu should I buy for my first PC? I have a budget around 800-1150 USD. I might not overclock right away, but I want a chip that can overclock if I want it to. I plan on moderate gaming ie. GTX 1060 or maybe a 1070 if I can get a deal. I also plan on programming on this pc. I wont be editing or making videos and all of the videos online mention content creation as in editing and creating YouTube videos and they never talk about coding. How much cpu do I need to adequately program? I am open to any suggestions including AMD or Intel. I want my system to be solid enough to last a few years. I know Linus recommends not getting the i7 7700k and rather buying the 7600k i5 so what would be good for me and my budget, AMD or Intel and which model(s)?

Thanks!   :)

Bad recommendation, don't get a 7600K, get an i7 7700 or a Ryzen 5 1600, both are better than the 7600K :D

This, except CPU cooler is unnecessary as the stock is almost as good and ssd is a bit meh, I believe you can get the sl308 for a bit cheaper right now.

Also I would wait before before buying this, as the 1070 is about $100 more than it should be. Or you could build now and get a 1080 instead as they're similarily priced :P

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Guys don't recommend the 1070 at its inflated price, you aren't far from a 1080 at that price point

I think the 1080 is too much for me personally. What price would you recommend buying the 1070 at?

Programming generally isn't hardware-intensive. But you do often want a fast storage drive and a rig that is decent enough to drive some pixels (in Eclipse). As others have mentioned, a Ryzen 5 1600 should be the best CPU option, especially since the extra threads are starting to become more important for gaming. I would also purchase an SSD and a decent video card.

I would wait for GPU prices to come down, though. Right now, the market is a bit of a clusterfuck. DDR4 is also wayyy overpriced right now.

Around $400, preferably $380 or so (but $400 is an ok price). The current prices of $470 or so is ridiculously high, at that point you might as well get a 1080 :P.

If you're interested, you could take a look at the used market for a 980 ti. Performance is similar to a 1070, it'll just draw more power.

AMD RYZEN 1800X OR 1700

-1800x is horrible value

-neither of those are a good choice for pure gaming, which op is doing

-1600 gives same performance for cheaper
