doing homework

Writing papers? Doing research?

You might consider the $329 iPad but that is a little over your budget.

that's fine I can only go up to 350, why an iPad?

more portable, more secure, better software due to the app store, has good cameras, games, very powerful CPU, higher resolution screen compared to a chromebook at that price.

To name a few reasons. Its biggest drawback is the lack of a physical keyboard but it will work with any bluetooth keyboard.

I'm not a big fan of Ipads, I was thinking of getting the Acer r11 is that a good choice just for doing light work?

Acer r11

It's a respectable machine with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 768p display,10 hour battery, and some USB ports.

Yeah it will do fine but that display would make me nauseous do to the low res.

but for comparison the iPad has 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 2048x1536 display, and 10 hour battery ( they can multitask just as good as a chromebook now btw)

What kind of iPad would you recommend?

Well like you said you can only do $350 so the base iPad would fill that role. It has all thought specs that I mentioned and you can use any old bluetooth keyboard to type better or even get a keyboard cover from whoever you choose later.

But this iPad will do very well: https://www.apple.com/ipad-9.7/\

btw iOS 11 will radically change the iPad:
