Hi, so I have a bottleneck on my 4690K (4.3 oc). Modern games like BTF1 always go 100% usage. I have a pretty decent pc except my 8gb 1333 ram. Would upgrading my ram improve performance in a noticeable way? Right now im not complaining about performance but if i could get around 10 fps more I would consider the upgrade.

Setup (4690k, 980ti, SSD, 8 ram 1333)

I'd try getting another 8GB. 16GB is pretty much the sweet spot for everything except heavy video editing or multitasking.

RAM has little/no affect on CPU performance unless you are running out of RAM.

yes upgrading 2133mhz ram would improve your performance.

Im not running out of RAM. You guys seem to have different opinions here.

If your CPU is at 100%, it's because the application is taxing it at 100%. If your RAM was the bottleneck, it's due to the following:

  • You're running out of space in RAM. Any time the application wants more space in RAM, the OS has to evict data that's unimportant to the hard drive (or crash if you disabled your page file, which you should never do). Doing this is a very slow process.
  • Your CPU would have execution stalls because RAM can't feed it fast enough. This is very rare. Bumping up the RAM speed has shown to appreciably improve performance in some applications, but in general, it provides very little, if any, appreciable performance gains.

So what I'm saying is, if you're not running out of RAM, your RAM is not a bottleneck. Since you say the CPU is at 100%, your CPU is the bottleneck in the system and there's nothing you can do about it besides upgrading the CPU.

However I should point out that some sites have reported Battlefield 1 performance does improve with higher RAM speed. However, this is not the reason why your CPU is at 100%. Battlefield 1 may simply be that much of a beast on the CPU so even if you upgrade your RAM, you may not see an improvement.

BF1 is one of those few games that can take advantage of more than 4 cores / 4 threads.

If you have 6 cores, it will take it and use it.

If you have 8 cores, it will take it and use it.

Your CPU at ~100% is not a bad sign.

If your CPU is at ~100%, and your GTX 980 Ti is only at...say... 50% or 60%, THEN that could point to a CPU bottleneck.

Can confirm what @M.Yurizaki is saying, BF1 does benefit with higher frequency RAM.

Well i went up to 4.4ghz and the CPU is still at 100% and GPU 50% on average... wtf is wrong with this game... not even playing 64 player mode. AC Syndicate however now goes almost 100% in both gpu and cpu, which is perfect. I guess this is just a BTF1 issue

Yeah think this is more down to the limits of the i5 than the system. Yes it technically is a CPU bottleneck, but this is also unique to BF1 as it really is one of the very few than go beyond 4c. I'd look around for a 4790K. I've had no issues gaming on 8GB ram at all but, BUT with i5's getting boxed out in the next few years I can see that same with 8GB so I'm moving my rigs up to 16GB.
