I'm working on coming up with a parts list for a new build that i'm planning. I kind of dropped out of computer tech for quite a few years and i've learned quite a lot from watching reviews and various other informative videos and such. Though i haven't been able to come to a decision on my own about what processor to get, mostly as i do not really understand the difference between them these days.

In all my previous rigs i have run AMD. Though those pc's were just for light gaming/web browsing/light video editing/messing around. Now that i am looking at putting my next pc under real work loads (i.e. more intensive video editing/higher end gaming/Digital Audio Workstation/Live DJing), i'm not sure what CPU to throw in.

Money isn't an issue too much but i don't want to spend top dollar just to get slightly better performance. Most of the applications i'll be using support multi-threading too, so the more cores the better i guess? I'm just not sure at this point.

Any help would be appreciated at this point guys!

I am partial to Intel.  Personally I go with Intel if I am going to be able to afford a separate GPU.  If not, then an AMD APU.

I am definitely planning on getting a dedicated GPU. I don't really wanna spend more than 2,000$. 1,500$ would be ideal. I would mostly be using said horsepower for DAW work. I use a lot a lot a lot of plugins and i would like to be able to use three monitors for screen real estate. I do not intend to do tri monitor gaming though. Not really interested in that.

2000 USD?

Do you need a copy of Windows or peripherals included?

Your best bet is probbalt a 4930k, 8350, or 8320 depending how much power you actually need and how much money you want to spend.

When you said video ending, drop everything and go Intel. They're better than AMD for video editing it seems (for example, my netbook with an Intel Atom N20 gets a 480p video done quicker than my friends low-end Athlon II X2, although just barely. But mine is a netbook).

Oh my bad. My first reply was just a general reply really.

I was already considering the 8350 or maybe even the ... 9370 i think it was?

I just didn't know how the Intels compared because i've heard hear tell that hyperthreading isn't really as good as having more cores. Though i've also heard that amd's more cores isn't really as effecient as intels fewer cores, so, they don't really work any better. So this is where my confusion lies.

This is the conclusion that i have come to with the video editing aspect.

there are plenty of build that are 1500 on this forum. U can probably take one of those and be happy.

I'll check em out thanks.

Performance difference? Depends on how you work.

Difference in power? Definitely.

HT is not as good as actual cores. AMD's cores aren't as efficient but not drastically so. They are still much more efficient than HT.

That's a really bad comparison.

Depends on your definition. My netbook is rendering a video as fast as an Athlon that does better game-wise. It's iffy, I know. But it's something.

Also, in your previous post, what do you mean depends on how one works?

Depends what content you're working on and your work habits.

If you put a heavy workload and stress the system often, a 4930k can provide a tangible benefit. If not, you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference with the 8320/8350.

It says very little about other lines of cpus at other price ranges from other sockets in systems with different specs.

I think i'm going to stick with AMD. I just can't justify spending more for something i'm hardly going to notice. I also don't plan on putting my PC on 100% load for extended periods of time except when maybe rendering video or playing crysis 3 which won't be as often as using a daw application which won't be as much of a constant system tax.

One last question that maybe you could help with, are the Asus rog boards (Specifically the Formula-z) worth the money for the looks+features? I do plan on overclocking.

Unless you're doing a custom cooling loop for some high oc's or you really want the red/black looks, it's not worth it.

I actually did plan on assembling a custom loop after putting this together but that was something i was just sort of going to collect the pieces i need instead of dropping cash all at once. I must admit too, that the red and black is what sold me. Just can't find anything else i would be proud to show off in my case. :/

As far as speakers? Right now i have some cheap 30$ altec lansing 2.1 speakers but i know if i'm going to be producing music i need to get good monitors with good bass response. Head phones aren't really so big a deal to me because i enjoy speakers more. Headphones are really only for not annoying people at 2 am for me. I have never used a sound card or had high end mother board with "good" on board audio so i don't really know the differences there.

I am, but not to the extreme. I would like to be able to get that extra performance out of my parts to where they will run perfectly stable. Water cooling is mostly for the looks for me, as shallow as that is, but it's the truth. I also plan on having this system for a few years with minimal upgrading than just buying a mostly new rig in the distant future. This is as much a hobby/enthusiasm pc build as it is function.

I was thinking of getting a xeon and not oc'ing at all for a cheaper red/black mobo.
