What are trends you feel are lame or not as cool as marketing will lead you to believe?

There are 3 which stands out to me. These aren't particularly bad, but the hype is what makes them lame to my eyes. In no particular order...

RGB. I have RGB peripherals, my graphics card has RGB and my motherboard even has RGB headers. Clearly I'm not against it by any means. What does concern me is the hyped push that just a few years ago RGB ram was a joke not to be taken seriously. Lighting options are nice, but I feel too much focus on that feature is what causes the hate.

Gaming style. Adding the word "gaming" is bad enough, but the style went from neat to "nice edge, bro" fairly quickly. Angled plastics and a color scheme worthy of Shadow The Hedgehog with a Linkin Park backtrack kinda isn't that cool, really.

Racing chairs. You're not setting lap records or pulling Gs. Used to want one of these so bad at one point, but they scream poser to me these days. Now a real racing seat for a sim set up? That's nice. ?

What are trends you feel are overhyped?

Tempered glass everything. Yes, it does look nice, but there are literal cases that would shatter to bits and pieces if dropped or hit with a sharp hammer. The plastic seethrough side panels are more than enough for me imho.

All tempered glass cases would make me too paranoid.

snip snip *just the tip*

On RGB: it makes things go faster. Like flame decals on cars.

On "Gaming": it's just marketing. With so many transparent sidepanel cases around, people WILL pay a premium to get the same hardware, but with a flashier piece of plastic on it. I'll take function over form any day.

On racing chairs: they're dumb and expensive. Most of the time they're crap quality too. We have them as a seating option at work and the only reason to use one is lumbar support, which the other option doesn't have. I'll take a decent non-gaming non-racing plain chair with lumbar support over a gaming chair.

RGB is nice, but in moderation.

It's like alcohol.

We got:

  1. RGB RAM
  2. RGB Cases
  3. RGB Motherboards
  4. RGB Mice/Keyboards
  5. RGB Mousepads
  6. RGB Headphones
  7. RGB Fans
  8. RGB SSDs
  9. RGB Waterblocks
  10. RGB Graphics Cards

Like no.. we don't need any more fucking lights okay! On top of that, every OEM has their own fucking RGB Sync system. It's so annoying!

idk

I like RGB for a unified theme, it can be tasteful if done right haha also yeah def on the chair. Mine is a nice office chair with a mesh back to breath. Leather is a big no no if you live in a hot area!

Yes omg

I like picking parts based off price to performance and individual rgb syncing is why I'm not going into the deep end. I'll stick to my purple/blue accent lighting and not be forced into a specific vendor just to change lights all at once.

I completely agree with the unified theme. I'm waiting on my 6 Purple LED corsair fans to arrive since my entire build is going to be purple. I'm only buying an RGB mouse and keyboard for the color purple, unless there are devices out there that are inherently purple that I don't know of x.x

My current machine has black and silver components, on a black desk and a black mousepad/peripherals

When on, white LEDs. That's all folks.

Headset is white, mouse is white, keyboard is white pulse when key is pressed.

Fuck rainbow LEDs too.

I do the same sorta to a degree.  I mean my rig is mostly black/red.  The Superflower OEM PSU I have has a blue LED fan which fits the theme, but the only off thing is the green mouse from Razer.  Might be replacing it in 2 weeks, but ya full rainbow sounds like a bad acid trip to me.

Rip open the PSU and replace the fan with a red one!

I have a correction for what I said above - I have a camo/orange mousepad, but the orange is just outlines, and it's black/grey camo with a big ol CSGO logo in the middle

idk

Was thinking of going with Logitech with my next mouse. xD At least I wasn't going for full rgb or white.

I can get my fav shade of red which is boss, but when setting to white, it's this weird bluish greyish greenish shade of why.

Just thought of something since RGB was touched up on. While not a trend per say, it bugs me lots of RGB is awful at whites. My Logitech's "white" looks so awful that it's unusable.

Beats good old Corsair Link

White is nice, and then goes pink when you reboot.

Solid system.

At least they updated it and fixed lots and lots of bugs but this issue existed for like 2 years

idk

Hmm, been looking for a new storage drive to replace my 2 1TB WD blue's and I roll my eyes at the "gaming drives" filter on Newegg. A high performance drive is a high performance drive. Stop making it out to be a separate category when it isn't
